Rays of Light Wants YOU!

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

It’s time for Rays of Light to staff up with another writer! Do you have a passion for Rays baseball? Are you an effective writer who is able to get his point across to thousands of readers every week? If so, you might be just what we’re looking for!

  • Is able to contribute 1 to 2 new, unique articles every week
  • Is able to come up with his or her own ideas
  • May be asked to fill-in writing game recaps

We’re looking for someone who is able to come up with his or her own ideas for fresh content and won’t rely on someone telling them what to write every week. Yes, there may be times where I have an article idea that I think would be great for you to do, but I really want to new writer to be able to come up with his or her own thoughts.

If you think this is something you’d be interested in, please send me an email to scottcaruso@gmail.com with the following information:

  • Name
  • A brief bio about you
  • Why you want to do this, and why you think you’d be the best person for it
  • At least 4 ideas for posts/stories you’d like to do
  • A writing sample using one of those ideas (at least 800 words)
  • Any other information you think might be relevant

What am I looking for in the ideal submission?

  • Solid writing fundamentals. If your work is not spell-checked and proof-read, don’t bother submitting it.
  • A unique voice. Not someone who sounds just like me.
  • Creative story ideas. If all of you ideas are “Spotlight: Carlos Pena” - that doesn’t show me much creativity

There’s no deadline on this; I’m going to keep looking until I find a candidate I’m satisfied with. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.

New Poll Widget!

Since everyone loves polls, we’ve added a new poll widget to the left side of the page! Let your voice be heard, and if you have any ideas for future polls, send them Scott’s way!

Daily Prospect Tracker

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

As part of the daily Minor League Wrap, I’m going to include the Prospect Tracker courtesy of First Inning.

Here’s the current list that I’m using. Are there any players that you feel should also be tracked? Let me know below!

Time For a Reset

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

You might have noticed that I’ve been posting a lot less lately. This baby thing has been taking up a lot more of my time than I thought it was going to. I’m trying to make some other changes in my personal life that will hopefully open up a bit more time for me to take care of the site and getting regular updates up for you all.

Unfortunately, this year has been a rough one in that I’ve been flying solo pretty much the entire time. Joe has been focused more on the Cubs site (and rightfully so), while JZ and Jon have had their own issues that they’ve been dealing with that have kept them away. Though it’s no excuse, I’ve simply found it difficult to put the same kind of time in over the past 2 months as I was finding before.

I’m going to make every attempt to change that going forward; not only am I going to try and find a few more writers to help out with the general analysis we like to give, but I should be able to do more writing on my own. One thing that I don’t expect to change is the unique voice that we bring to covering the Rays. Call us the “eternal optimists” or the “voice of the fan” or whatever you want, we’re never going to be the guys who bludgeon you over the head with stats, even if we fully believe in their value.

It may take a few days for things to finally settle back to normal, but rest assured that you’re going to be seeing all of your favorite posts that you’ve come to know and love: Lunch Break, Minor League Wrap, Recaps/Game Threads, the chat room… it’s all going to be reset and brought back to the masses. Though I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “re-launch,” it’s certainly going to be a return to what made this site great.

I take full responsibility for the fall-off in recent weeks, and I take full responsibility in the attempt to make the site great again.

Down Goes Giambi! Down Goes Giambi!

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

And Evan Longoria is the final member of the 2008 American League All-Star Team. What an amazing accomplishment for a guy who started the season in Durham. Congratulations to Evan, and thanks to all of Rays Nation who voted for him.

My apologies

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

I’m really sorry about pretty much missing the entire ENORMOUS Red Sox series this week (at least from a blogging standpoint). I’ve been distracted by a pretty big emergency to go along with trying to take care of the baby. I should be able to start regular posting again starting tomorrow.

Here’s a random thought for you: I’m extremely excited to see what Reid Brignac can do. Discuss.

Minor League Opening Night

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

As you probably know, tonight is Opening Night for Durham, Montgomery, Vero Beach, and Columbus.

With that, that marks the return of JZ to bring you the Minor League Wrap! Stay tuned for The Wrap coming up sometime tomorrow, where JZ will break down all of the action.

Rays of Light/View from the Bleachers NCAA Tournament Pick ‘Em

Monday, March 17th, 2008

It’s that time of the year again! MARCH MADNESS!!

As we did last year, Rays of Light and View from the Bleachers are teaming up to put together an NCAA tournament pick ‘em so that you can prove that you’re the best and the brightest among our group.

And, oh yeah, there’s a prize, too. The winner of the pick ‘em gets - are you ready? - a copy of MLB 08: The Show for PlayStation 3! Even if you don’t have a PS3, this ends up being a nifty little cash prize for someone who didn’t have to pay any money to join the competition. If we get a lot of people, we just might add a second and third prize, too.

Navigate to the following link: Tournament Pick’em to join the fun! Remember, you’ve gotta be signed up with a complete bracket by the opening tip of the first game on Thursday in order to be eligible. Go Rays of Light!

Attempting to use diaries again

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

I, like you guys, lots of times forget that we even have the diaries here on the website. I’m going to make the conscious effort going forward to use them on stories that don’t need too much analysis or explanation (or are otherwise wholly un-Rays related). You can still comment on them like normal stories, so feel free to go to town; the only difference is that they are off to the right in the sidebar rather than spotlighted on the main page.

Remember, anyone can sign up for the Rays of Light diary system and begin to post their own diaries as well. We may even take select diary entries and make them features on the website. If you’ve ever wanted to be a writer for Rays of Light, starting a diary is better than any application you could ever send in. If you’re not already signed up, feel free to do so today! If you are, why not post a diary when you’ve got the chance? It doesn’t even need to be Rays-related; the diary system is open for anything you want. Except for those nude pictures of Kirstie Alley; you can keep those to yourself.

What You Need to Know About Diaries

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

What is a diary?

Diaries are the newest addition to Rays of Light in response to the widely successful system piloted on the Sports Blog Network. Diaries allow the community to blog their thoughts in posts of their own on the site. Essentially it’s a blog within the blog.

Why should I care about diaries?

The addition of diaries will serve two purposes to make the site better:

1. They will increase the amount of new content on the site each day.
2. They allow you to not only have a voice, but also to hear the voice of other very intelligent fans that read the site, but aren’t currently on staff.

What do I need to be able to post a diary?

The only requirement to be able to post a diary is that you are registered as a user of the site. You can sign up by clicking the “Contribute” icon located in the right sidebar. This will take you to the sign up screen where you will choose your login and enter your e-mail address. From there, we will send you an activation e-mail for you to activate your account. Doing so will send me an e-mail saying that you registered and will send you an e-mail with your temporary password. We have it set to default to marking you as a subscriber, which means no diary privileges. When I get notified of your sign up, I’ll contact you to assure you are not a spammer. Once you reply back to me, I will list you as a contributor and you will be free to post diaries as often as you like.

How do I post a diary?

Once you’re registered and listed as a diary contributor, you will want to login using the link in the navigation box at the top of the right sidebar. Once you login, you will be taken to a dashboard that looks like this:

From there, click on the option that says “Write a Post” and enter your title and post.

Once you’re all finished and have looked over the spelling and things of that nature, it’s time to post it to the site. Because we’re in the beginning stages of diaries, all of them are subject to moderation. By clicking the submit for review button, it posts it in the moderation queue for me to review, but it doesn’t send me any notification that it’s there. The easiest way to make sure your diary is review ASAP is to click the box that says “ready to post”

By checking this box, it sends me an e-mail instantly that a post is ready for me to look at. Once I approve the post, which is just to prevent spammers, it will be linked in the sidebar in the diaries section for all to ready and comment on.

Will my diary ever see its way to the front page?

Definitely. One of the things we’re most excited about is the ability to move high quality diary posts to the front page as featured posts. Consider it an audition for the show. Who knows, you may even find an e-mail in your box inviting you to join the staff.

Are there things I should focus on in my writing?

One of the best things to remember is to write things that people will want to read. For example, posting about something that is already on the front page may not be a great idea. Remember to keep the posts free of profanity and keep it focused on baseball or sports in general. The most important thing is to have fun with it. Talk it up to your friends. Get them to sign up and let’s start growing this community.
