Though some speculate that this could open up the door for Elliot Johnson to win the backup infielder spot out of the Spring, it doesn’t sound like this – on its own – will do that. If Cannizaro is ready to go again by Sunday, he won’t have missed enough time to cost him anything.
What this does do, though, is give Johnson a chance to play a little shortstop and prove that he can do it for a few weeks until BenZo is ready to go.
Isn’t it amazing that we’ve gone from writing Johnson off as a prospect to having him potentially spend the first week or two of the season on the big league roster in the span of just a month or so?
