Beware the Ides of March

Written by , Posted in General

I just hope they don’t cut Matt Szczur today. Just sayin’ – if I’m him, today’s a hump day.

Unfortunately, I have no true post idea for this. I’m rambling, so if you feel like rambling along, read on. I won’t blame you if you want to wait for something more baseball intelligent or heartfelt, as this is likely to be neither.

Walk up songs would be better if we could choose them for each player. We could have some fun with that, but let’s keep Len Kasper out of it. I mean, how much fun would it have been to play “Twisting the night away” for Felix Pie? Right? Or perhaps “Simple Twist of Fate” is a better choice.  I’d love to hear the fan reaction if Jake Arrieta came up and they played “Should I stay or should I go?”  Maybe “Wish you were here” for Dexter Fowler when he comes to town. Once. Jason Heyward is low-hanging fruit (no, Seymour, that’s NOT a “balls” joke.) For him, it would be easy to suggest “Money for Nothing,” “You think I Ain’t worth a dollar, but I feel like a millionaire” or “Kind of a Drag” but I’ll go with “In the year 2525” because he’ll still be with the team then, right? Javy Baez? “Smooth.” Addison Russell? “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” Maybe if the fearless commissioner comes to a game, they can play “The disregard of Timekeeping” (an old Bonham song.) When the team from St. Louis comes, how about “The Fun Machine took a shit and died” (look it up – Queens of the Stone Age…early 2000’s if memory serves.) I’d love to hear your ideas. Unfortunately, there is not a song called “Throw it to first already!”

Still not loving either spring training or the WBC, although both Twitter and Instagram are constantly trying to blow me up about both. I am, however, getting excited about the SEASON…which isn’t far off. I’m trying to understand my own feelings – do I desperately want them to repeat as bad as I wanted them to win that first one? (I mean in my lifetime, of course.) Kind of.  I work out 3 times a week and the guys I work out with at 5am on M-W-F are two Met fans and a Cardinal fan. I TRY not to be an asshole. (Have you met me? It’s not easy.) But…they do push some of the wrong buttons. Met fan #1 says today that the Met pitching will be the thing that guides them to a WS victory. I said, “I can think of at least one OBSTACLE to that.” He says, “it was not an obstacle in 2015.” I say “expletive deleted – how’d last season work out for you? And, by the way, Matt Harvey will look good in a Yankee uniform soon. And how are you going to win ANYTHING with a team that can only score two runs a game…and that’s only if Cespedes stays healthy and we know he WON’T.” Anyway. I told you. I’m rambling today.

Do what you have to do to join us in San Diego. It’ll be a great time and worth it. Even with CAPS there. You’ll all know which day of the week you born on when you leave.

I’m heading to Chicago Friday – and will be there through the weekend.  I love Chicago for St. Patrick’s Day, and plan to be completely Irish by the end of the night. I may need a complete change of blood Saturday, though. So if you are hanging out in the bars Friday night? Look for me…I look exactly like the avatar, but won’t be wearing a hat or sunglasses. Probably. Nonetheless, buy someone a drink…it’s good karma.

I feel the same way about Spring Training, Sherm. Watching it is like dating was in 8th grade. You know, when a girl would make out with you and *maybe* allow a hand to venture here or there, but no more. Bring on High School! I mean, Opening Day!

    • cap’n realist

      ahhhh….Catholic School Girls.

  • Eddie Von White

Fun read. Won’t be in Chicago or San Diego as I have other priorities right now. Would like to be in both.

Kyle Hendricks walk up: Bleeding Heart

    • Sherm

I go to Eau Claire quite a bit – next time I do, if I can add some extra time, maybe I will drive down your way for a lunch or dinner if you are around.

      • Eddie Von White

That would be great. You just made my day.

  • Doug S.

I’ll take spring training baseball every day of the week as a nice slow buildup to the season. It sure beats hockey that drenches the sports scene around here. WBC? Not so much. Can’t help noticing that Baez and Molina seem to be buddies. Well they’re on the same team – for now.

Does college hoops blow you up Sherm?

    • Sherm

It used to – I lived in Las Vegas and went to UNLV, so there was a time when that was a big deal, and then my daughter went to UVA and I moved to the heart of the ACC, and…lo and behold, enough was enough. Other than Cub baseball? I don’t like the 2×4 approach to news. If it’s clubbing me in the head all the time? It eventually gives me a headache. That’s my long way of saying that I keep college hoops on the periphery most of the time.

      • Adam Peters

I work at UVA, Sherm. Where do you live?

      • Sherm

I now live in Mooresville, NC (north of Charlotte, on Lake Norman) but my daughter (and her husband) both are UVA grads. I moved here after she graduated, but we still go back to Charlottesville from time to time because it’s one of the best little cities in America. What do you do at UVA?

      • Adam Peters

Hazardous Materials Manager. Let me know when you’re in town next time!

      • Sherm

Will do – is Carmella’s still there? We loved that place, but I heard it either closed or moved.

  • Your real life mouth is slightly less equilateral.

    • Sherm

  • Buddy

I like Sczur as much as the next Cub fan, but he is really nothing more than a 4th or 5th outfielder. Lots of those floating around the majors and the minors. He’s just a warm body basically. To paraphrase a quote from one of our fantasy league GM’s…”Backup outfilelders are a dime a dozen, and I have a pocket full of change.”

    • Adam Peters

I beg to differ. Szczur has proven time and again that he is an excellent pinch hitter, which cannot be said of most players, bench or other. Sure he’s not Willie Mays out there, but he’s a very solid defender and he’s a super high-character guy.

I assume everyone knows how he saved a little girl’s life by donating his bone marrow to her, but just in case:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpXB7g92Wzo

If you can watch that without tearing up you are dead inside.

      • Sherm

I have seen that – and he is beyond the shadow of a doubt, a TRUE sports hero…relative to other athletes who seem to think they are. 4th or 5th outfielders might be a dime a dozen, but guys like Matt Szczur are not.

As far at Matt Szczur, baseball player? I still think he’s a very good hitter. I love his approach – he’s “quiet” in the box, and he explodes on the ball. The Cubs have a lot of talent, and that might mean that he won’t be on this team forever (I still like him better than Jon Jay, but I’m not the guy to discuss “lefty/righty” splits with.)

For the record? The comment in my morning post was related to Shakespeare…I didn’t think he’d actually get “cut.”

      • Seymour Butts

        Removed due to bitchyness

      • Buddy

Didn’t mean to imply that he isn’t a good person. I’m sure he is. I just meant that he is a very replaceable ballplayer. Maybe I’m missing something in regards to his pinch hitting, but his career numbers in that role are pretty terrible: .213/.250/.288. Granted it’s only 80 career at bats as a pinch hitter, but they have been 80 bad at bats. Again, nothing against him as a person.

      • Dork

Lighten up Buddy, maybe you need some sugar? As a 4th Outfielder he is a pretty good one, He wont make it though wavers because on some teams he might be a third outfielder or at the very least better than other teams 4th outfielder. Not all of baseball is played like fantasy where you can choose from any team when a guy gets hurt. In fantasy leagues only 250 of the available 600 rostered players are used, in that case your right 4th outfielders are a dime a dozen.

      • Buddy

I think you may have missed my point, but that’s OK. It happens to me a lot. I’m not saying the Cubs should get rid of him. I’m just saying it won’t matter if they do. He is very replaceable is all that I meant.

      • JTBarrett16

I get what you’re saying and I agree with you.

  • cap’n realist

The level of baseball being played at the WBC is below that of college baseball right now. Painful to watch and I have officially given up. If they’re going to have it, find a way to get the BEST players from each country to participate and make it legit. Or don’t. The way it is now is unwatchable. Caribbean born players representing the Netherlands, and American born Jewish and Italian kids representing Israel and Italy are somehow supposed to make this interesting when team USA has names like Trout, Harper, Kershaw, Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, Sale, Donaldson and Bumgarner MISSING from the roster. I could make a better team out of the USA guys that AREN’T there than the current roster. So a 10 inning win over Columbia doesn’t have me excited, nor does a win over a Canadian team full of US born minor leaguers with one Canadian Parent whose ace pitcher and top reliever both retired from MLB in 2013 and (gulp) 2008 respectively. The tournament is a sham, and I certainly hope baseball gets it’s shit together before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Shut MLB down for 2 weeks like the NHL, and lets see who has the best team in the world.

    • Sherm

Right? I’ve been to Holland several times – didn’t see a whole lot of “color.” Or baseball, for that matter.

      • JTBarrett16

You guys do realize that Aruba and Cauraco are part of the Netherlands, right?

      • Sherm

Yep – and Puerto Rico is “part” of the US.

      • JTBarrett16
      • Doug S.

Close, CAPS – but not quite cigar worthy. Aruba separated from the Dutch Antilles years ago, though they maintain some sort of relationship with the Netherlands that can be twisted for the sake of populating a baseball team.

Nice place to visit. The food is unexciting, but the beer and beaches are very good.

      • JTBarrett16

Aruba is one of the four countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Netherlands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The citizens of these countries all share a single nationality:
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aruba

      • Dork

This is the thing about talking about spring training. There really is nothing baseball related to talk about.

    • Doug S.

Yeah. Team Italy really felt the loss of Rizzo this time around.

      • Sherm

Reminds me of a funny (to me, anyway) story from my childhood. Was this difficult family on my block back when I was in what we called Junior High School…second generation Italian and I TRIED really hard to like them, even though they were ultimately just unlikable, I guess. I’m at their house one day and the kid says something to the effect of “every name that ends in a vowel is an Italian name.” I suppose I COULD have just let it go, but I said, “if you mean that all Italian names end in a vowel, that could be true because I can’t think of any that don’t.” He said “NO – every name that ends in a vowel is an Italian name!” and his mother, the matriarch of stupidity, says “Robert is right!” I said “yeah? What about Yamamoto?” And she says “get out of my house.”

        Ah. Good times.

    • Dork

I agree guys aren’t at midseason form, it still seems like spring training baseball and the best player have chosen not to participate. The WBC is one of those nice ideas that just is not executed that well.

  • Doc Raker

I have met you Sherm and you are no a-hole. I have met Seymour and although he is fixated on male genitalia he isn’t an a-hole either. I know the Capn very well and he is one funny dude without being an a-hole most of the time.

Rizzo, the hit by pitch leader- Hit Me With Your Best Shot

    • Seymour Butts

      Dick JOKES… not dicks.

And I have (obviously) met you and you are more of an eye-hole most of the time.

      • Doc Raker

        Just sayin……………..JOKES would imply humor….debatable

  • Jerry in Wisconsin

Three Comments 1) Sherm you are more entertaining rambling than I am when I try to be entertaining.
    2) We need to find out which song annoys Len the most and then play that as the walk-up song for every batter until he quits. 3) I do not think the Mets won in 2015, therefore they still have many obstacles, other than the Cubs. The Cubs are World Series Champs! when was the last time the Mets could say that!

    • JTBarrett16

I work with a few Mets fans and they hate seeing my 2016 World Series champions hat. I tell them get a 1986 champions hat and shut up.

  • JTBarrett16

Speaking of the WBC, I watched 3 Javy at-bats last night and I wanted to rip my hair out. He’s back to his wild swinging ways. Even the broadcasters were saying with the amount of talent he has on the field, that if he can ever get it together with the bat, he can be a superstar.

    • Sherm

      You grew hair?

      • JTBarrett16

        I have actually, yes.

      • cap’n realist

you must be a contortionist to be able to get your hands to the middle of your back…

      • JTBarrett16

I’ve been growing out my head hair since October. I want to go back to my shaggy hair days. I like the long locks.

    • cap’n realist

but he actually celebrated a tag out on a runner stealing, BEFORE he tagged they guy. Find the video. Purists will hate it and call it hot dogging. It’s totally hot dogging and its fine until someone is safe.

  • Sherm

    Thought of a couple more.

Schwarber – 83 (by John Mayer) Song doesn’t fit. Number does.

Montero – “Are you ready for some football?”

  • Brad Lyerla

I am buried in work. But I want to say that I hope Szczur sticks. He is a decent pinch hitter and a good chemistry guy.

    • With lucky underpants.

      • Kyle

And Rizzo prefers his hard wood to his own, apparently.

  • Doug S.

Loved the tease for the post. Who could resist clicking read on? Not the VFTB faithful apparently.

  • JTBarrett16

I think Chicago already dyed the river green.

  • Bruce Fritz

I don’t personally feel excited about the WBC either but it’s good to see that Javy is ready for the coming season

    • Dork

This is fun for the WBC and spring training, but I hope that i don’t see this technic in the regular season.
