Morning News: Kris Bryant goes deep and Cubs make impact in World Baseball Classic

World Baseball Classic Update

The day started off with a bang giving us some truly exciting World Baseball Classic games. Japan and the Netherlands battled into extra innings before Sho Nakata hit a two run single to take the lead and Kazuhisa Makita closed it out. Japan now is 1-0 in the second round of the Classic.

The Dominican Republic pulled out some more late game heroics as they took down Colombia in 11 innings and now have a 3-0 record in the first round and will be advancing to the next round.

Puerto Rico dominated Italy 9-3 and both sides featured Cubs players. Baez had another solid day going 2 for 5 and an RBI. Cubs AAA outfielder and potential bench option John Andreoli did make an impact for Italy as he hit his second home run in the WBC.

The late games included USA v.s. Canada and Mexico v.s. Venenzuela.

Cubs v.s. Athletics

We got a good look at another potential regular season lineup for the Cubs.

  1. Schwarber
  2. Bryant
  3. Rizzo
  4. Zobrist
  5. Russell
  6. Heyward
  7. Montero
  8. Szczur
  9. Almora

Schwarber looked good going 2-4 and taking a walk but Bryant really stole the show going 2 for 3 with a home run. It was also good to see Chesny Young go 2 for 2 and continue to look like a future MLB utility option. Arrieta got the nod and struck out 5 while walking 3 and giving up 1 earned run. The pitching staff looked good until Williams Perez came in and gave up 4 runs and unfortunately Rob Zastryzny got shelled as well. In the end the Cubs dropped the game 8 to 9 but the offense looked good.

News Around the League

The Rockies suffered a setback as Ian Desmond suffered a left hand fracture.

Julio Urias will start the season in AAA to keep him fresh for a potential playoff run for the dodgers.

Jason Kipnis will likely miss the beginning of the season with shoulder soreness.

Things to Watch Today

The Cubs face off against the San Diego Padres at 3:10 PM Central Time as John Lackey takes the mound.

  • Jerry in Wisconsin

It is snowing pretty good here in Milwaukee, Winter isn’t over yet.

    • JTBarrett16

18-24 inches projected here in MA and I’ll have to work tomorrow unless the state declares a travel ban

      • Adulting is hard.

      • JTBarrett16

I’m not complaining. I just have to get up earlier and be careful on the roads

      • Dork

        Give yourself a lizzie!

      • Seymour Butts

        Wiseass! (Smiley face)

    • cap’n realist

      what’s winter?

      • Sherm

Cubs are Winters. Cards are Losters.

      • JTBarrett16

Did UIC ever cancel class for bad weather when you were there? I only had 1 snow day during my 5 years there despite several major snow storms.

      • cap’n realist

it was 27 years ago…and I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night.

      • Should we just go around the horn and tell CAPS how many snow days we had at college. 0.

      • Dork

I don’t remember a snow day, but like the Cap’n that was a long time ago and I was killing a few brain cells at the time.

      • Eddie Von White

I have passed that logic on to some of my friends over-indulgent beer drinking friends – who by the way – love it. College snow days: 0. And that was 30 years ago.

      • Doug S.

Only had 1 snow day in college.
January 23, 1980. Can’t remember what day of the week it was.

      • Did you get up earlier and carefully drive to campus, only to find school closed? Or did the dean give you a call and let you know not to come in..

      • Eddie Von White

I’m going to throw out a wild guess – Friday.

      • JTBarrett16

2008 was a repeat of 1980. New Year’s Day is the same day of the week as my birthday the year prior. My birthday was a Tuesday in 2007. Making January 23, 1980 a Wednesday.

      • Sherm

I went to UNLV, ergo, NO snow days.

Missed classes for a variety of other reasons, but never snow.

This is fun. Tomorrow let’s talk about what we liked to wear to class.

      • SPOILER ALERT: jeans

      • Shit. Now the whole game is ruined.

      • Eddie Von White

My shirt of choice in grade school was a button down collar buttoned all the way up to the Adam’s apple.

      • Edward Von Business Casual

      • Zero.

      • Seymour Butts

I am really hoping you were replying to what we wore to school.

      • Wiseass! (smiley face)

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

0 Days 29 years ago and that included a day where it was -25 and I had to take a swimming class. My hair was frozen thought the next class.

      • Seymour Butts

        I had 1.
University of Wyoming sits at 7200 feet above sea level and there is snow on the ground 6 months of the year. We just dealt with it. The single snow day was a blizzard over the thanksgiving break and a large number of students could not get back to town.
Also skied to school at times (cross country skis).

      • Funny thing about Boston, they just deal with it too. As does Chicago, NYC, and actually every single human living in a winter climate. Hard to believe it but Caps doesn’t have this market cornered either. Go figure.

      • JTBarrett16

MA has yet to issue a driving ban but Connecticut has. And the name of this storm is Stella. I’m going to refer to it as Storm Tommy.

      • Those students should have gotten up earlier and driven carefully back to town.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

Why ruin their fun. Getting up late and rushing through things is what college is all about.

  • Doug S.

That meltdown was difficult watching yesterday. Little Z sure got beat up. Nice to see Bryant do well.

    • Sherm

I’m having all kinds of trouble giving a shit about spring training. Every other year? All those “wait til next year” years? I was all over it…see who was hot and who was not, and ooh…will they be any good this time around? This year? Not a bit. I don’t think I’m tainted by winning. It’s not like they’ve developed a dynasty (yet.) I just don’t care. I just don’t want anyone injured.

I’ll be all in when the season starts…I just can’t get excited about Jhon Jhay’s preseason average or Heyward’s swing arc.

      • Doug S.

Interesting comments. This year is no different to me, the same hunger, almost as though I’ve forgotten we won the championship.
But I need to keep the BP down, especially during cactus games.
Note to self – next time the pen coughs away a W in spring training – chill a bit, we won the world series.

  • This Happ kid is the real deal.

    • Seymour Butts

      Looks like he plays hard.

    • Doug S.

      On fire, great to see.

    • JTBarrett16

He should be our center fielder. None of this crap with Heyward or Jhay.

  • Doc Raker

I have snow day amnesia since moving to SoCal and I like it that way. No snow days at Sloan Park

    • Does the dean give Cali kids sun days, or do they just have to leave early and drive carefully?

      • cap’n realist

No, but the beach cities have Presidents Day week off. They call it ski week.
