Morning News – World Baseball Classic Fever

Written by , Posted in General

The Baseball World had an early start Tuesday with the Netherlands facing off against Korea in the World Baseball Classic. The Netherlands thoroughly beat Korea 5 to 0 and Korea is now in a 0-2 hole and facing elimination. The Netherlands is an exciting team and features a strong roster that includes Andrelton Simmons, Xander Bogaerts, Didi Gregorius, Jonathan Schoop and Jurickson Profar in the Infield and Wladimir Balentien in the outfield who is a superstar in Japan. Their pitching staff also features the tallest professional baseball player in 7′ 1” pitcher Loek Van Mil. It’s a pretty fun team to watch so you should keep your eye on them.

Samurai Japan

Another early morning game occurred out in Tokyo as Japan faced off against Cuba. Japan pounded Cuba 11 to 6 and proved they will yet again be a contender for the WBC Title. Team Japan is loaded with strong talent, some of which may make it to the MLB at some point so they are certainly a team any baseball fan should keep their eye on.

Cubs vs Italy

The Cubs got into the World Baseball Classic action Tuesday as they faced off against Team Italy and lost. This was one of many exhibition games between MLB teams and WBC teams.

Notable Cubs Articles

Jesse Rogers wrote an interesting article regarding the new MLB Hazing Policy and talks to Cubs players about there thoughts on it. It’s a good read and worth a look.

What to Look for Today

The Cubs are off but there is plenty of International Baseball to take in. The Netherlands are facing off against Chinese Taipei in another early game at 4:30 AM.  Then at 5 AM Japan looks improve to 2-0 in pool play as they take on Australia. The nightcap for the World Baseball Classic looks to be a good one as Israel faces off against The Netherlands at 10 pm. There are also a number of MLB teams playing exhibitions against the world teams throughout the day so there is plenty of baseball to consume today.

Israel and the Netherlands advance from pool A, while South Korea and Taiwan are eliminated. When the Dutch advanced in 2009, they had to extend visas and hotel stays for the team. Pretty low expectations. I wonder if they did that this time. On a positive note for Roger Clemens, he should have no problem getting his dry cleaning done now that Korea is out

The Dutch advancing in 2009 was courtesy of a massive Marmol meltdown.

      • JTBarrett16

Still kind of lousy the way accommodations were set up for them.

  • Eddie Von White

Is this really a fever, or just a cold?

    • Buddy

I’m not sure I would even call it a cold. A sniffle maybe?

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

whatever it is CAPS has it really bad.

      • Eddie Von White

        Allergies.

      • Buddy

That must be what it is, because I get a rash if I try to watch.

  • Doc Raker

I watched China get beat by Cuba. There outfielders looked lost, the CF stopped short on a catchable ball that bounced 2 feet in front of the fence, it would of been a difficult catch but I thought if he kept running he makes the catch. The left fielder coming in on a line drive only to have it go over his head ala Minor B Little League like CAPS used to do. We get spoiled watching big leaguers, you realize all the little things big leaguers do so well all the time when you watch these young hard working players make Seymour fantasy camp plays.

    Anyone going to spring training?

    • Sherm

      When does it start?

      • Seymour Butts

        July.

Apropos of nothing, my mlb.tv subscription is going from $2.99 to $24.99! No thanks. I will read the sports page. Sheesh.

    • I think it was around $120 for the whole year for me.. seems about the same as previous years.

      • JTBarrett16

$112.99 for the entire year. I just might buy it this year. I got a 2nd monitor for my computer. I would be able to do work on it, while I watch the game on the other monitor.

      • Doug S.

Same here, except when you convert it into Canadian Pesos it’s $895 plus taxes.

      • cap’n realist

        are those loonies or tooners?

      • Doug S.

It’s toonie or twonie, but those are loonies.

    • Eddie Von White

      They still have those?

      • Sherm

Yes, but they are only accepted at Teem ‘Ortons…(it’s funnier to me if you say it with a French accent)

      • Doc Raker

        Poutine on me

      • JTBarrett16

Love Tim Horton’s! Their sour cream donuts are the best

  • Doc Raker

Jason Marquis is pitching for Team Israel. Isn’t he 54 years old?

    • Mark_from_Toronto

I think Eric Gagne and Ryan Dempster are both pitching for Team Canada. It’s turning into the SBC (Senior Baseball Classic).
