  • Lizzie = A funny, timely quote made on the VFTB site by our writers or commenters.
  • Lizard = The best Lizzie.
  • MVL = Most Valuable Lizzie’er: The person with the most Lizzies in the period under review (usually the past two weeks.)
  • Top 10 of the 2014 Season = The folks with the most aggregate Lizzie points YTD (1 point for every Lizzie, 3 points for every Lizard.)

As you already know, this is all completely subjective and according to my whims.

Lizzies

  • Whoever I pick for #1 will go on to have a HOF career if he is traded. That is my luck.
  • As much as all Cubs fans wanted him to be manager one of the best moves Theo made was not hiring him as manager.
  • I like a manager that plays the best player regardless of contract and or service time.
  • I flipped over to Len on the Cubs broadcast and learned that Michael Buble will be performing live on Dancing with the Stars.
  • I think that Michael Buble is dreamy. Maybe not Geo Soto dreamy, but dreamy nonetheless.
  • How do you think these injuries conversations go? So Edwin we think your side is hurting, how about a DL stint and rehab assignment?
  • Watching the same amount of Cubs games, which is every opportunity. It’s now the time of year when I get the “why?” from other baseball fans at the sports bar. Or maybe I’m wrong and that’s all year.
  • I also want to thank my teammates here at the VFTB who toss up some serious batting practice lunch meat to be knocked around the VFTB yard.
  • Tarpgate
  • groundscrew
  • I remember that for sure. I went by SB2 then, and my avatar was a picture of Seymour’s buttcrack next to another picture of Seymour’s buttcrack.
  • Len would like the Cubs to play them in Baltimore next time, since he hasn’t seen their new park yet.
  • There is nothing more exciting that watching a kid from the minors come up and get his first chance.
  • Word has it Soler batch cooks plantains.
  • It only makes sense, Doc. Young players like Soler are on the road, a lot. Factor in double headers and extra cuts in the cage…you are going to be wiped most nights. Batch cooking plantains on a rare day-off is definitely the way to go. You can scoop a bunch into your mitt on the way out the door.
  • Glass half full, this is the best thing for Baez to see how good the pitching is at this level. He knows he has to continue to get better.
  • From what I’ve seen, his two issues are very workable and very common: he’s susceptible to the high fastball with two strikes and generally susceptible to breaking pitches low and away.
  • I think 2015 will be an exciting year.
  • They both now enjoy sitcom celebrity status in Japan’s remake of The Odd Couple. LaHair plays the messy Oscar Madison and Fukudome is the metro sexual Felix Unger. Th episode where Fukudome gets lost in a pile of dirty laundry when walking into LaHair’s bedroom was classic. Fukudome had to be rescued by their friend Murray the cop played by Julio Zuleta.
  • Is that the one where LaHair keeps mistaking Kosuke’s cup for a miso soup bowl? Classic.
  • I thought Hee Seop Choi was the cop…
  • Hee Seop Choi and Micah Hoffpauir were the Pigeon sisters.
  • LaHair agreed to the part provided that he also get to play Quincy, M.E. in the Japanese remake of that, called “Yuso dead.”
  • We need to have every prospect debut in Cincy.
  • Johnson!
  • Ask and you shall receive…
    1. That Koyie Hill could sure hit!
    2. I love the way Dusty Baker handled the Cubs pitching staff.
    3. Junior Lake looks like a future All Star.
    4. I really miss Darwin Barney.
    5. The Cubs need to bunt more often.
  • 6. Len Kasper is an exciting baseball broadcaster.
  • 7. The Cubs should put James Russell back in the starting rotation.
  • Two different call-ups with three bombs in their first three games…and both had a multi-HR game. I feel bad for Kris Bryant. Anything less than instant dominance and he’s going to be “the other guy.”
  • Be careful what you wish for.
  • Has anyone ever been called up from Fantasy Camp? MLB should allow a 41 man roster and that 41st spot has to be a Fantasy Camper. The Camper would pay $100,000 to travel with the team and get a certain number of at bats and innings played on D during the month of September. Maybe the team could auction off the spot, think of the possible revenue a team could generate.
  • It’s been done. Remember AAAron Miles?

Lizard

  • EJax on the 15 Day DL…Bruised ego.. I mean…strained right Lat.

Chit Chat

Who would you like to see the Cubs call up next?

  • Doug S.

If Kris Bryant is eligible I’d like to see him called up, get some MLB exposure.

    • Buddy

Hopefully they call up Ty Griffin, Lance Dickson and Earl Cunningham. Those guys are going to be awesome!

  • Dork

I am looking forward to my guy Mike Olt raking starting Friday!

    • Doc Raker

Who will strike out more often, Mike Olt or Javier Baez. I am sorry but Baez is not big league ready.

      • Dork

If you look at the last 10 games the Baez strike out rate is down to 34%. Mike Olt had a 29% strike out rate in Iowa. So a close call, I don’t know why I am rooting so hard for Olt-y, maybe the comeback story.
I think you can see Baez improving, though slowly I am not sure if I think he will see some more time in the minors to begin next year like Rizzo did or not.

      • Eddie Von White

        I like your unbridled enthusiasm.

      • Jedi

He’s got more golden sombreros (4) than he has multi-hit games (3). But the impression from the front office is that he’s here to stay.

So either they’ve learned their lesson about trying to reinvent a player after the debacle that was 2013-Starlin Castro; or they just don’t want Baez thinking about being sent back to Iowa.

I do have concerns about Baez’s long-term viability. There’s only so much damage you can do against MLB pitching when you don’t keep your eyes on the pitch.

    • Seymour Butts

So where are we going to be seeing Olt? He’s not on the active roster. Will he be playing third for Raker’s Bad Mojo team?

      • Dork

Story i’ve heard is he got in too late from Appleton, I have to wait until tomorrow to celebrate the raking.

Would love to see Bryant ASAP, but that probably won’t happen this year. More like May 2015?

    • Dork

As fun as it would be to see him up at Wrigley too, it is such a no brainer to keep him off the 40 man so that they can protect an additional pitcher through the rule 5 draft. Braynt does not need to be protected.

Len said no Kris Bryant this year and then broke into the song ‘Gloria’, G-L-O-I-A Glooooo ria. I am not making this up. Did anyone else her Len sing a few bars of Gloria?

    • Buddy

      Thankfully no.

  • Mark_from_Toronto

While I’d like to see Bryant come up with the big club (even more so since I’ll be watching the Cubs live next week as they’ll be here in Toronto for a 3 game series), I know it won’t happen. I’ll have to settle for Mike Olt instead, perhaps he has turned things around from earlier this year.

    • So exciting for you, Mark! Hope you have a blast no matter who’s called up!

      • Dork

Have fun at the games, I am hoping to get to the Rodgers Center one of these days. I travel up there occasionally and always have the “drive by”

    • Doug S.

Mark, I hear that Real Sports (near the ACC and Rogers) is one of the best sports bars anywhere. You been?

      • Mark_from_Toronto

I haven’t been to Real Sports, but might check it out this time. If anything I’m sure the beer there will be cheaper than at the Rogers Centre where it was $9.50 when I was there last season.

      • That’s nearly five twonies!

      • HLCBSL691

        Looney Tooneys!

      • Mark_from_Toronto

That’s right, too many coins for one beer. At least the beer vendor was honest last time I was there as he was shouting “Cold beer! Get your slightly overpriced cold beer here!”

      • HLCBSL691

Do they take US currency at the Rodgers Centre? I stopped at a Burger King in Canada on my drive to Boston and they said they take US money but it’s 10% less. So a $10US is $9. And they gave me the change in Canadian.

      • A Whoppers is a still a Whopper, but it is ‘Le Whopper.’

      • HLCBSL691

Homer: English side ruined. Must use French instructions. Le Grille!? What the hell is that!?

4 twoneys, 1 looney and 2 moose to be exact.

      • HLCBSL691

So quarters are called moose. What are nickels and dimes called? And pennies before they were eliminated?

      • Doug S.

A 5 cent piece is called a “Pouty” (after Poutine) and a 10 cent piece is called a “Timmy” (after Tim Hortons).
        What are pennies?

      • Seymour Butts

        copper

      • Mark_from_Toronto

No more pennies, they were eliminated by the Government this year.

      • HLCBSL691

        It was last year.

Drinks on me at Don and Charlies since Lizzie once again recognizes my genius. We will also be celebrating the growth of the summer arctic ice cap. Apparently Al Gores warning 7 years ago of the polar ice cap melting away by now was wrong, really wrong, like opposite wrong. Todays arctic summer ice cap has expanded greatly so we can celebrate my VFTB genius and the good news for the global climate. I am sure President Obama is going to call off his plan for carbon taxes right after he eliminates global jihad being waged by that JV jihad team.

    • Dork

Wow, that polar ice cap thing is a huge relief!

      • Seymour Butts

Well it would be if it were not entirely bullshit.

It’s much more believable that we’ve existed on earth for centuries, but in the last 100 years we’ve wrought such a calamity that we’re just decades away from our certain demise. (please choke on the sarcasm)

      • Doc Raker

The article you posted evaluates the arctic icecap up to 2012. If you took the time to read the study posted by the Univ of Illinois you will find it specifically states that the ice cap has grown SINCE 2012 to its current level. The claims of the global warming alarmist of melting polar ice caps are not coming true. Scientist were also quoted in the Univ of Illinois study to admit that the variance of ice in the polar caps is most likely due to NATURAL VARIANCES just like the earth has varied it’s entire life. What is bullshit is politicians telling us they can save the planet by over taxing us and enriching their political cronies in the green industry.

Maybe one day you folks that have invested in this fraud will admit you have been duped by a politician. Until then just keep trying to censor and demonize anyone who disagrees with you.

      • Dork

Can I see this data in a spreadsheet? What is the WAR?

      • Doc Raker

The war is on our wallets and fossil fuels. I am sure the Univ of Illinois study has loads of data for your spreadsheet. Data that documents polar ice caps that are not melting. Data that is ignored by the folks who have invested in the global warming fraud.

      • HLCBSL691

Now Barry wants to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. How about no. These people flipping burgers are doing so because they didn’t do well in school, didn’t take their work seriously, and bullied the smart kids. If you’ve been there for 10 years, why are still flipping burgers? Why are you not a manager or owning your own stores?

      • Doc Raker

Minimum wage is another liberal policy fraud. It reduces employment from the very people that need to work, entry level low skill labor. It increase costs for everyone but hurts the entry level low skilled the most. It hurts the overall economy which hurts the entry level low skilled worker the most. It helps the 18 year old kid working part time living with his high income parents. Most minimum wage earners are not head of house holds, most minimum wage earners are part time workers living with wealthier heads of house holds.

When the minimum wage is raised everyone on the employment totem pole gets a raise, the minimum wage earner doesn’t get any closer to a living wage.

Thomas Sowell, the smartest man in America, has written about the minimum wage fraud for many years.

But raising the minimum wage does make a good sound bite for a politicians faux attempt at helping people. The same people who think a politician can control our climate with the stroke of a pen will most probably believe a politician can eliminate poverty with the stroke of a pen. Just ask Seymour, a learned medical doctor who falls for most every liberal fraud ever perpetrated.

      • HLCBSL691

I agree with you. If the head of the household is supporting a family on minimum wage, there are much deeper reasons why that no amount of money will fix

      • HLCBSL691

If minimum wage was increased to $15 an hour, prices would go up and then we’re back to square one.
        http://static.fjcdn.com/pictures/Inflation_71d4de_3875500.jpg

However, while minimum wage should not be increased to $15 an hour, it can’t stay where it is forever. Because 10 years from now, $7.25 an hour won’t have the same purchasing power as it does today. I can also accept increasing the tipped wage and making it 50-60% of the non-tipped minimum wage.

Seattle airport already raised the minimum wage to $15/hour and it’s a disaster:
        http://shiftwa.org/sea-tac-workers-not-happy-with-15-min-wage/

      • Doc Raker

Wages do increase in the free market. Also, wage increases are relative to inflation. Of course a mandated wage increase will increase inflation. Raising the minimum wage or even having a minimum wage is a fools gold which is perfect for a fool like Obama.

Carlos Zambrano has retired which most of you probably know. Can he still pitch?

“I don’t think so,” said Zambrano, who has retired from the big leagues. “I think I can hit. I was telling one of the [Cubs] scouts that I was playing catch the other day after five months, and I felt like I was throwing a rock. I think I’m going to stay home, see what happens next year. God has the last word.”

Then he slugged the Cubs scout in the nose and busted up a gatorade cooler just for old laughs.

I feel this way too, I started rooting for the brewers(not cardinals) and the A’s(shark and Hammel) in the absence of the cubs being involved. I am clearly a curse.

Cubs lost on Sunday by the way. Travis Wood is not the Travis Wood of 2013. It amazes me how a pitchers dominance can fluctuate throughout their career. The Bears lost also as did the Packers. Those darn Cardinals won as did the Angels but the A’s blew a 3-2 lead to the Astros in the 9th inning on 5 walks. The Astros scored 2 runs on no hits with our old friend Geovany Soto catching for the A’s. It is the curse of the bullpen that follows Geo everywhere he goes, a gift from Wrigleyville that keeps on giving.
