  • Lizzie = A funny, timely quote made on the VFTB site by our writers or commenters.
  • Lizard = The best Lizzie.
  • MVL = Most Valuable Lizzie’er: The person with the most Lizzies in the period under review (usually the past two weeks.)
  • Top 10 of the 2013/2014 Offseason = The folks with the most aggregate Lizzie points YTD (1 point for every Lizzie, 3 points for every Lizard.)

As you already know, this is all completely subjective and according to my whims.

Lizzies

  • the only suggestion I’d make is to consider having open threads (Game 35 – Open Thread) when daily game threads become too much.
  • Wait!? Your mouth is not in the shape of a triangle? I am confused…
  • It took 3 surgical procedures to smooth out the corners. I think it turned out nicely.
  • The drawback is that his kids’ shape-sorting skills are going to diminish quickly.
  • I am very happy to be a co-MVL with Seymour!
  • I suggest you pick the place of dinning for the Co MVL celebration.
  • Hopefully there is a subway near Don and Charlie’s.
  • C’mon Seymour, at least upgrade to a toasted bun over at Quizno’s.
  • We’ll have lunch at Subway and dinner over at Don and Charlie’s. Raker is invited.
  • If we invite Raker we will triple the wine bill.
  • You buy lunch, I’ll buy dinner, and Raker can buy the drinks.
  • I’m honored to share the spot light with EVW as well.
  • Very good self- marketing ploy on behalf of Richard Sherman.
  • Bryan LaHair was released by his Japanese team. It will be interesting to watch the next episode of our favorite Japanese sitcom to see how they deal with this disappointment.
  • That episode pretty much writes itself.
  • the Cubs’ farm system is rocking the charts these days.
  • I blame Norm.
  • What ever happened to Dave? He would crap on anyine’s cornflakes.
  • Dave’s not here
  • , man.
  • I am pretty sure anybody with a baseball marble in their head will consider the upcoming 2014 Cubs season a wash.
  • Even when they win during this fine stretch of futility, I feel like they are losing.
  • yes we were the first group to play any organized ball on these fields.
  • I have reservations about whether or not we could call Randy camp either organized or baseball.
  • Getting the pitching machine a jersey would be a step in the right direction.
  • I love the Cubs because I am a baseball fan…I don’t love baseball because I am a Cubs fan.
  • before sabermetrics were the trend, before prospects were analyzed to death, and before the rooftops had seats on them, before Twitter was a thing, baseball was just… baseball.
  • Arguing with strangers on the internet about frivolous details strips joy out of the sport and makes enemies of people who would normally have been friends
  • What’s so bad about loving baseball without all the extra stuff?
  • To me the beauty about baseball is how you can enjoy it on so many levels.
  • the logistics of digging into the batters box without a pissed off wife at home are mind boggling.
  • I always made it my priority to make sure that kid got a hit or succeeded in some way on the field to contribute.
  • Baseball is one of the few things in the world that humans can’t ruin no matter how hard they try. Beer falls into that category as well.

Lizard

  • I believe in what they are doing, but I don’t have to enjoy it.

Shout Outs

  • A hearty shout out to Chet West and Still not Dave, each contributing his first off-season Lizzie(s) this time around.

MVL

  • We have three folks tied for Most Valuable Lizzie’er this time! Congratulations to Chet West, jswanson, and Seymour Butts. Keep up the good work gentlemen!

Top 10 of the 2013/2014 Offseason (one point for each Lizzie, three points for the Lizard)

1. Doc Raker
2. jswanson
3. Eddie von White
3. Seymour Butts
5. Sean Powell
6. Noah
7. Joe Aiello
8. Jedi Johnson
9. Doug S.

Chit Chat (Olympics Edition)

These are the sports of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. Which are your favorites?

  • Alpine Skiing
  • Biathlon
  • Bobsleigh
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Curling
  • Figure Skating
  • Freestyle Skiing
  • Ice Hockey
  • Luge
  • Nordic Combined
  • Short Track Speed Skating
  • Skeleton
  • Ski Jumping
  • Snowboard
  • Speed Skating

Trivia Questions:

  • What (number) Winter Olympics are these? Bonus if you can tell us in Roman numerals!
  • There are fifteen sports listed above, but how many actual events are there? Hint, many of these sports have several different events, so the answer is way more than 15!
  • Twelve of these events are brand new this time around. Can you name some?

I will post the answers this afternoon. (I know you’re all capable of googling all of this but if you decide to do that please don’t ruin the fun for others by posting the answers immediately just so we all think you’re brilliant. We know you’re brilliant. Save us the display and let people guess a bit. Thanks! On the other hand if you give it an honest go, please post away! More power to you if you’re correct!)

Final Question: If I gave you an all-expense paid trip to Sochi, would you go?

  • PLCB3

Favorite sports are ice hockey and speed skating. The best part of speedskating are the crashes. Last Olympics, South Korea was set to sweep the medals, and one of the guys knocked out his teammate. It would have only been better had he taken out both his teammates.

How come you didn’t list the half pipe as an event? Are you counting that under snowboarding?

    • I didn’t list the events, I listed the sports.

      • PLCB3

Oh so half pipe, slop style, etc all fall under snowboarding then? Slopestyle is one of the new events, one which Shaun White was supposed to take part in but withdrew over safety concerns. I bet if it was after half pipe, he’d do it. That’s all I will give away for new events because that’s the only one I know of.

Will watch downhill skiing, maybe some of the hockey.
That’s a great final question. My knee jerk response was a yes, but I don’t know. There’s an attraction to visit St Petersburg and Moscow, but the smaller places? I’ve known guys who’ve played junior hockey at a high level and travelled to places in Russia. Some stories!! Not many of them good.

If the “all expense paid” includes unlimited bottled water and a port-a-john, I’m in.

    • Jerry in Wisconsin

I bet the port-a-john would be cold, it is the winter olympics.

      • Doug S.

        I understand it’s a 2 seater port-a-john

    • PLCB3

If you get the premium annual pass for Universal Studios, it comes with 8 free bottles of water.

Bobsleigh, I root for the Jamaican Team man. Hockey, luge, downhill skiing, pretty much everything but curling and cross country skiing.

I will be watching Curling, Is it the the XXII winter olympics? I would like it to be the XXIV, so I can show my Roman numbers off, by the way roman numbers are the reason I never became a computer programmer. No, there is no way I would go to Sochi, my wife would not let me, even if Putin voluntered his suite.

    • Eddie Von White

I’m doing my taxes in Roman Numerals this year to confuse the IRS.

      • PLCB3

There’s no Roman Numeral for zero.

      • Eddie Von White

        They’re confused already.

      • PLCB3

They’ll think you had a Homer Simpson attack when you list your income with all those M’s. Income: MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM…Donuts

XXII is 22. Why do you want it to be the 24th Winter Olympics? They will have a vote on it next year.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

        24 was Jerry Morales’ number.

      • PLCB3

What’s the significance of that? He wasn’t anything special with the Cubs.

      • Eddie Von White

He was special with Jerry, isn’t that enough?

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

Part of the joy of being a Cubs fan is all of the characters the Cubs employed. You need to know players like Jose Cardinal, George Mitterwald, Mick Kellaher, Joey Almalfatano. Did you know that Tinkers and Evers did not talk to each other, Cubs history is amazing.

      • Budyy

And who could forget Tarzan Joe Wallis?

And who could forget Tarzan Joe Wallis?

      • Doc Raker

Jerry Morales, one of Cindy Sandbergs favorites. Don’t forget Marla the ball girl, I think she had an eye on Jerry as well.

I would not step foot in Russia ever, I have an aversion to totalitarian regimes that killed over 100 million of their own people in the name of communism.

    • Now I’m curious. Tell me more about this decision.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

Started in Engineering in college was forced to take a Fortran class. Program was to generate a random number, convert to a Roman number, then convert back. Logic was flawless, but format statement was not. After three hours of frustration, and being rescued by a friend, it was clear programming would not be for me.

      • I feel your pain…math guy writing software. Delimiters can be evil little things.

      • Fortran was my favorite. That’s hard to type even, LOL.

Is mixed doubles curling a new event for these games? It was a demonstration event at the Vancouver games, which were the XXI Winter Olympiad.

Bobsleigh, Ice Hockey, Luge, and Ski Jumping. I am guessing it is the XVI Winter Olympic games. I would not go to Sochi mainly because my wife and I refuse to vacation anywhere but where it is warm. Sochi does not qualify.

I would pass on the trip to Sochi as well. I don’t want to burn my face in the shower

    • Jerry in Wisconsin

Now that Seattle has won the Super Bowl the grunge look is in. Putin made sure to fix was in just for the Olympics.

      • PLCB3

I was referring to the journalist who tweeted a picture of the faucet water looking like apple juice, but okay.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

I am referring to the same thing. If I knew the only way I could get a shower was with that water, I would buy some cologne and go the week Grunge style.

  • Mark_from_Toronto

Not really a huge Winter Olympics fan, but I’ll likely watch the hockey since it’s basically like an NHL all-star game except that there is an incentive to win.
Based on what I’ve read about Sochi thus far and the countless crazy Russian dash-cam videos I’ve seen, I think I’d pass on the all-expense paid trip.

  • Seymour Butts

Not a big Olympic fan in general and even less so of winter games.
I might, however, be enticed to watch whatever games are attached to the Roman Numerals XXX.

  • Drinks on Raker as usual. Greetings from Iowa. My primary take-away from this week of new job training is an urge to exit Iowa. Back to the family with deep knowledge of bland food and flatness tomorrow…feel sort of bad for Vitters and Jackson.

    • Doug S.

You’re raining on my parade of wanting to go to Des Moines to watch the AAA team. Must be some redeeming things, no?

    • New company or just new position? Congrats either way!

      • New company. Plateau-ed with one of the big dogs so took on with an up-and-comer. Ready to build a niche and ride things up. Satellite branch in Boz so perfect situation for the xswansons.

      • That’s fantastic, good luck! Perhaps they’ll swing you by Iowa again during the baseball season. Have a great weekend home with the girlswansons!
