  • Lizzie = A funny, timely quote made on the VFTB site by our writers or commenters.
  • Lizard = The best Lizzie.
  • MVL = Most Valuable Lizzie’er: The person with the most Lizzies in the period under review (usually the past two weeks.)
  • Top 10 of the 2013/2014 Offseason = The folks with the most aggregate Lizzie points YTD (1 point for every Lizzie, 3 points for every Lizard.)

As you already know, this is all completely subjective and according to my whims.

Lizzies

  • Here’s to Kottaras adding a bunt, bloop, flare, duck snort, cattle fart or texas leaguer to every 10 at bats to make the saber world quiver. OPA!
  • They are pretty reserved when it comes to duck snorts, due to the vagaries of ducks snorts snorted into the field of play.
  • Why does it worry me when I read “I think Cubs fans will realize quickly how good we had it last year”….???
  • Joe, just how large is your closet that you have all of these old scouting reports in them? Is there room for clothing?
  • I only wear a fig leaf.
  • Did I not tell you? I only wear a fig leaf. They take up little to no room in the closet. I went that route as the scouting reports began to pile up.
  • Happy 50th Birthday to Dr. Raker! On the downward slope to 100 now.
  • There is, of course, no fool like an old fool. Don’t forget to pack your Metamucil.
  • It’s riddled with discontentment and complaints over what we have, coupled with excessive whining over what we don’t have.
  • Fans of a team that simply are exhausted.
  • Did Shark steal your girlfriend at some point?
  • Maybe the Cubs should field a Japanese team. Then we would either win their championship or be a failure on two continents.
  • Stop. You had me at “Stick your hands in my sack and pull out a marble.”
  • Preceded by “Close your eyes.”
  • As so long as DB has developed an out-pitch this off-season, I’m fine with this move.
  • Dude is an OF.
  • Anything can happen when the hot stove is cooking with gas, Chuck.

Lizard

  • Close your eyes. Stick your hands in my sack and pull out a marble.

Shout Outs

  • Congratulations to Chuck, Doug S, Jerry in Wisconsin, and Sherm for winning their first off-season Lizzies this time around.

MVL

  • Congratulations to Joe Aiello our Most Valuable Lizzie’er this time!

Chit Chat

  • I got nothin’. Who wants to suggest a topic?

Finally saw some Cubs news this morning. ESPN is reporting Theo said “There’s no trade imminent” regarding Shark. I guess that’s news.

    • We’ve made a move… Bogusevic for Justin Ruggiano. He is rumored to have more power than Bogusevic, and confirmed to have an easier name to spell.

I don’t think we should trade Shark, he may not be an ace but he can pitch. He reminds me of Rich Harden, he throws well the first 4-5 innings of a game and then the wheels come off. Pair him up with another good 4 inning pitcher and let them pitch one game. I know that is unconventional out of the box thinking that will garner laughter and ridicule but some day a manager will do that and be successful and then every team will do it. Mark this post, you heard it here first kids.

    • Doug S.

Doc, I agree. Been following this kid since his ND days and want to see him succeed as a Cub.

      • PLCB3

Did he play football at Notre Dame?

      • Doug S.

Baseball and football Caps. All American WR.

      • I remember someone mentioning this at some point.

    • PLCB3

I suggested that last year to piggyback Garza onto Shark to stretch him out while playing for the MLB team. The only issue with carrying a starter and a piggyback reliever is that you have to burn 2 roster spots instead of 1. I like the concept I just don’t see how you can make it work with a 25-man roster. Certainly something you can do in September with the expanded rosters. Or if you have a 30-man roster but only 25 active players on gameday. You just have the 4 other starters inactive plus one other player.

      • Doc Raker

With a complete game rate of -3.2% for starting pitchers 168 games out of 162 use 2 or more pitchers per team. What is the difference between 1 relief pitcher pitching 4 innings verse 2-3 relief pitchers pitching 4 innings? This piggyback or tandem system, I named it the tandem system in an article I published in Baseball Esoterics (very small circulation) back in 1996, is completely doable.

      • PLCB3

But then what about the rest of the days where you get 5-7 innings from your starter and need the 2-4 relievers to give you the final 2-4 innings? That’s where the roster crunching comes into play.

      • Doc Raker

With an 11 member pitching staff that is 5 relievers for the other 4 games. Doable.

      • PLCB3

But then the days a reliever is not able to pitch because he’s gone 3 days in a row you’re now down to 4 relievers.

      • Doc Raker

        Still doable.

      • PLCB3

I suppose for those games you have the starter who’s turn it is for a side session available.

      • Chuck

I never understood why teams with a bunch of mediocre starters did not implement a tandem system for them. Tell them that the “starter” is only going to go 4 or 5 innings then the partner would go in for 4 or 5 innings and if he still going strong in the 9th, leave him in. Then switch “starter” and reliever the next time their spot in the rotation comes up.

I wonder if pitchers would stay healthier that way. Fewer pitches for the starters and more rest for the “relievers”.

      • PLCB3

You could have the piggyback for 1 rotation slot though. Because you still need a regular bullpen.

      • Chuck

Why? Tandem up the 3, 4, and 5 spots in the rotation (and, really, do you need a 5th starter spot all that often?) and you don’t need the bullpen for tandem days so you still have 3-5 (5 on those weeks where you don’t need a 5th starter) relievers to get you through the #1 and #2 spots in the rotation.

    • Eddie Von White

Why are you not in the front office? Those guys could use some of your (fore)sight.

      • Doc Raker

        Waiting for an offer……………

      • Chuck

        Can I be your minion?

      • Doc Raker

Sure, Seymour too so we have someone to entertain us.

  • Chewing on a foot of sandwich from Seymour’s. Although I’ve never been, I assume Subway’s pastrami offering is on par with that of the Carnegie Deli.

Big news. Texas Rangers rule 5 draft Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Heisman fav Jameis Winston. Apparently they just want good athletes, doesn’t matter what sport they play. Theo, Jed….go to school.

    • Jedi

I’m not sure watching the Rangers waste a couple of Rule 5 picks on guys who’ll never play baseball is the best example of Cub mismanagement.

It’s a PR move by the Rangers.

      • Doug S.

My lame joke attempts don’t always read as intended.

      • Eddie Von White

There’s no joke like a lame joke. Keep them coming.
