Friday Notes

  • “Asia’s Heartbeat,” Arirang News (“Arirang,” by the way, is the title of a traditional Korean folk song) reports that the Cubs could be one of the favorites to land Korean RHP Suk-Min Yoon, a 27-year-old who probably projects to be a reliever in MLB. He’s young and has had some success in Korea, so he would be an intriguing target for the Cubs. He doesn’t appear to be the caliber of pitcher that the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu is, though.
  • Dave Martinez interviewed for the Cubs’ managerial gig yesterday. His work with Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay seems to be his strongest résumé bullet. I won’t go into the rumors regarding the situation with Martinez and Ryne Sandberg’s wife, because you can read it on virtually every other page on the internet. It looks like the next Cubs manager is going to be one of Martinez, Renteria, Acta, or Hinch.
  • Daniel Bard – the once-awesome reliever that the Cubs picked up off waivers from the Red Sox – will pitch for the Puerto Rican Winter League. If he can reclaim even 80% of his old form, it will be a great pickup for the Cubs.
  • WGN Radio is taking the option to renegotiate their deal with the Cubs. Like many Cubs fans, I have a special, nostalgic place in my heart for WGN (both radio and TV). Apparently, WGN Radio is losing money on Cubs games, so they’d like to start paying less for them. Maybe this opens the door for other stations.

  • Jerry in Wisconsin

We must keep both Pat and Keith they are teriffic!

    • Sean Powell

I’ll agree with you on Pat

  • PLCB3

I think the Cubs are going to negotiate a 5-year deal with wgn tv and radio to synch it with their csn deal and then in 2019, negotiate a mega-contract that will pay half a billion a year. The sports bubble is not going to burst until Washington acts

    • I bet evil Sox fan Tom Tunney and his aldermen cronies will find a way to line their gilded pockets somehow before this shakes out.

      • PLCB3

You’re probably right. They’ll likely tie it to the renovation talks, saying the Cubs don’t need the video board and the ad sign to finance the renovations.

      • He is the worst.

      • PLCB3

What Tunney is saying is that everyone can make money on the Cubs except the Cubs, who to begin with drive everyone’s money! I hope everyone enjoys going broke because they got whiney that the Cubs wanted to make some more money off the Cubs. They should just move to Rosemont, the mayor is offering them a really sweet deal.

      • Couldn’t say it better myself. I demand a recount…this alderman has got to go.

      • Doc Raker

Pat and Keith we keep, Len we need to ditch.

      • Eddie Von White

At first I didn’t care for Keith very much because he wasn’t Ron. But he tends to grow on you.

      • Doc Raker

Keith is good, Pat is great. You know who is really good Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk doing Blackhawk games. You want a taste of Chicago dominance start following the Hawks. Great team, great broadcasters , Stanley Cup Champions and the coolest logo in sports.

How many Stanley Cup Championships have the Blackhawks won? More than the St Louis Blues!

I liked Ron Santo because he was Ron Santo… but on any sort of objective basis Santo was not a very good color commentator. When you flip a game on the radio, you should be able to know what is going on in the game (score, runners on, who is up, count, number of outs), within a minute (barring being in a commercial break). Ron’s stories, though, could take up a lot of the broadcast. Some liked the stories a lot, some didn’t. Keith stays more focused on the game.

      • Eddie Von White

Yes. Exactly. And it was hard to decipher Ron’s good groans from his bad groans when a play was unfolding. But he added a lot of color.

      • Doc Raker

Chicago politics, similar to the head Chicago politician in DC. The government will tell you what you do and how much you will pay. Tyranny is a democrats best friend, all under the guise of the common good. What a bunch of dopes we are for putting up with this tyranny.

      • PLCB3

I am not an Obamoron. Nor am I a low-information voter.

      • Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos.

      • PLCB3

I voted for Walt and Mickey

      • PLCB3

The Obamorons can tell the GOP to shut up because they lived through 8 years of Dubya. Well, Barry Hussein is far worse than both the Bushes put together. It would make a great episode if Homer beat up Obama.

  • So, who are you guys pulling for?

    • Doc Raker

      Blackhawks.

    • Jerry in Wisconsin

I am rooting for a strike that will cancel the rest of the season!
