Box Score / Highlights / Condensed Game

Another game and another non-win for Chris Volstad. Noah tweeted last night that the one bad inning struck again for Volstad, this one coming in the 5th. My gut says that he can still right this ship and be a productive member of a Major League staff, but my head is continuing to stab my heart with stats and game film that prove otherwise. At this point, I’m just not sure what the Cubs can do other than continue to run him out there every five days to see if he can get things fixed. With Randy Wells basically out of the picture now that he’s been removed from the 40 man roster, we’re running out of names to take the ball. Think about what this rotation will look like once Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza are moved. At that point, we’re going to see something like Jeff Samardzia, Paul Maholm, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad and Casey Coleman. Yuck!!

Aside from that, what else is there really to say about this game? We got on the board fairly early and gave Volstad some support, but he couldn’t make it count. The bullpen got hit hard again, and Chipper Jones showed why he’s going to the Hall of Fame with a 5-for-5 night at the plate that included four RBI.

A series split so far with another two games to go. Looking at the pitching matchups, I like our chances in both.
