Because of my schedule I had to wrap up my review on Monday evening this week. Never fear, though, I’ll pick up exacty where I left off for the next column. Until then, enjoy these gems. Great stuff this time around, guys (and gals!)

Lizzies

  • Somewhere, deep in the bowels of this underachieving Cubs team, lies a winner.
  • Wait a minute. You say Castro has less than desirable defense? I had not heard that around these here parts. I should get out more.
  • the Cubs should hold a fan contest for fans to bat in the final three slots because we wouldn’t be getting any less production.
  • At least Theo didn’t try to get my hopes up before the season – “we don’t have much talent” – as past regimes have tried to package journeymen as “the missing piece”
  • I would love to see a more dynamic competitive team out there, but I am content to suffer through what we have to suffer through so in the future we do not have to suffer.
  • Pandering is ugly. (that should get me a Lizzie, right?)
  • When designing comments specifically to be Lizzie worthy (and face it, this may be the best part of the year), Start with a modicum of Geo, some beef stock, and carrots. But don’t include LaHair. Nobody likes LaHair in their soup.
  • Pretty sad when wordsmithing to earn a Lizzie is more exciting then Cubs baseball.
  • If you’re intentionally trying to craft a Lizzie it won’t work. The Lizzie’s are subjective to whatever Lizzie’s dexterous mind is at any given moment and that is what makes them so much fun. You just never know what will dazzle her fancy.
  • Is it bad that I got my FLOTY (First Lizzie of the Year), and I can’t even find the dang thing in the list?
  • (Singing) The rhythm is gonna get you.
  • Who signed up to recap this horri-awful game?
  • Reed Johnson continued his tradition of being the man by coming in to pinch hit in the eighth and belting a leadoff double down the left field line.
  • I wish Byrd the best.  I always liked him, but it was time to part ways.
  • “Disabled List Signs Kerry Wood to a One-Year Deal.”
  • So yesterday the team almost really did reach bottom when Castro was hit. Thankfully it wasn’t a DL stint…
  • I can’t think of any player on the team who shows one ounce of emotion – ever. And that bugs me.
  • Pretty sure I noticed a slight frown on Soriano’s face the 2nd time he gassed at the plate with bases loaded.
  • Love the new “Stats Sunday” on the broadcasts by Len and Bob.
  • Why isn’t there a bigger deal being made about LaHair getting pulled?
  • I agree, LaHair should be getting every at bat at 1B.
  • I don’t like how Sveum is treating the Cubs like a Little League team.
  • But they play like a Little League team.
  • The 2012 definition of a successful series is one in which we don’t get swept. So, congrats on yet another successful series.
  • I know it would make Lizzie very sad to see her stallion behind the plate get shipped off to a foreign land, but I think he’s in play here.
  • catchers age in dog-years.
  • Perhaps the most important thing to come from this game – the Cubs finally won a series
  • As for Marmol, how many times does he get to do this?
  • the sheer number of opposite field hits we’re getting right now, especially in big spots is very encouraging.
  • Kyler Burke….he so dreamy
  • Admit it, there was some part of you that thought that maybe, just maybe, the Cubs would get a sweep of this series.
  • As a society of fans, we ought to do a better job of celebrating quality character and the players who exemplify it.
  • young, stupid, and a multi-millionaire is a bad combination
  • Walk forward with integrity and you never have to look backwards to cover your tracks.
  • I’ll be curious to see how Castro reacts in this series with all the advice he’s been getting  lately about being careful with the phillies.
  • Maholm beats Halladay, I hope the sun comes up tomorrow.
  • We lack guys who can do the hitting part…
  • Bobby Abreu was released, and no, the Cubs shouldn’t sign him
  • I have Super Cuts and Husqvarna ready to sign you as a spokes person
  • I just don’t see how you can count on [Marmol] in any type of high leverage situation
  • Campana is what I love about baseball..small ball.
  • Too bad baseball isn’t played like that anymore.
  • Why do you consider them “small-ball” guys?
  • Small balls?
  • Carlos Marmol is slowly sucking the life out of me.
  • I like having Mather in left field instead of Soriano.
  • I’d rather have a sack of potatoes in left field than Soriano.
  • Let him play himself out of the spot instead of just taking him out of it.

Shout Outs

Congrats to the following folks who got their first  2012 Lizzie this week!

  • LVCubFan

Lizzie’s Kitchen

It’s almost too warm for soup, but pick a rainy day and enjoy!

Chit Chat

I’d like to hear your everyday team. Working with the current Cubs 25-man roster, who would you play every day? No platoons, no days off, no accounting for overloaded contracts. Who do you want to get the playing time? Eight guys, one per position. If I can figure out a fun way to do it, I’ll turn it into a sort of competition. We’ll see. Good luck!

  • Joe Aiello

I’d like to suggest adding the MVL award each week awarded to the person with the most Lizzie points. If case of a tie, defering to the person with the most total Lizzie points in the standings.

Also, is it bad that I can’t remember how many, if any, of the comments above are mine?

    • I love the idea of the MVL! And I’ll get back to you with your quotes. You had two or three or four I think!

      • cap’n obvious

I’m in favor of a new LPC (Lizzie per comment) stat. Most of the leaders’ success is akin to flinging copius amounts of poo at a wall and hoping some sticks. Sure Raker has 40 Lizzies, but are 40 Lizzies in 22,000 comments all that valuable? I’m too busy this time of year to comment 22,000 times.

    • Seymour Butts

There is only one most valuable Lizzie.

    9-DeJesus

When Clevenger comes back I might have a change at catcher…

    • Joe Aiello

You going with the progressive, no leadoff, approach?

      • Jedi

I listed the 8 players, one per position using their scoring position (Catcher=2) – maybe I misremembered what Lizzie was asking for.  That wasn’t meant to be an ordered lineup – just positional.

      • Joe Aiello

My bad, I should read better before talking junk.

    SS – Castro
    1B – Rizzo
    LF – LaHair
    3B – DeWitt
    2B – Barney
    C – Soto
I know I cheated and used Rizzo, but that’s my lineup in MLB The Show for PS3 and I’m 16 games over .500.

    • Jedi

I’m curious – does DeWitt boot the ball at 3B in the video game too?  I would love it if he was able to play 3B, but with the Cubs he has 7 in errors in 37 chances at 3B.

Jim Abbott could play a better third base than Blake DeWitt I think

      • LVCubFan

He’s actually a vacuum in the game, while Castro is extremely lifelike – club leading 10 Es

    • I’m with Norm on this…you DeWitt guys are nuts.

      • Jedi

I guess that’s me – and frankly I could be easily convinced to switch. But I think Barney’s probably just having another hot start; and I like DeWitt’s approach at the plate more. He seems to have a plan when he steps in the box, Barney’s just winging it a lot of the time.

You know Barney came in 7th in ROY voting last year? True story.

Not wanting to wait for today’s recap, I’d  like to say how wonderful it felt to see Marmol piss away a victory today. Why wonderful you say? Because it has got to be the last straw. Look for a demotion very soon.
Hey Joe, there is now spell checking automatically in the comment box. Is that you or my using Firefox that did it? If you, thanks.

    • I was at work and almost yelled something when I saw what had transpired. I’m starting to think Dempster did something to Marmol. It’s his 3rd blown save on a Dempster outing. Second where Dempster pitched 8 innings.

      • Eddie Von White

If I’m Dempster, I will beg, plea, bribe, cry and threaten Sveum if he ever puts Marmol in to close one of his games again.

Can Mather play 2B? If so, let’s try it!

  • My goodness, as if the old version of Disqus didn’t hate my iPhone enough, they felt the need to ramp that up a with this new version I see. Yippee.

    • Eddie Von White

      Make that a double yippee!

    • flyslinger2

      This new version is nasty.

    • Joe Aiello

What issues does it give you? I have no problems with it on my iPad 2

      • In my case, sporadic typing, hidden letters (the letters are there but not showing) and inability to reposition the cursor if I have to make a correction somewhere mid-comment. This refers to the iPhone. Haven’t yet tried it on my iPad yet. I’ll let you know. The repositioning problem was also with the last version. The other stuff is new.

Time to bench Marmol. It’s so nice not being able to watch the games. It doesn’t spike the blood pressure. Instead, I had a lovely day at Daytona Beach, Hakuna Matata. And no, I did not wear a Speedo.

Being gratified that I made the Lizzies twice this week (L the check IS in the mail) I think Joe is trying to ratchet up his chances of not sitting in the Dunk Tank at our first annual summer VFTB picnic. What picnic might you ask? The one that we haven’t had to this point because no one has volunteered to plan it. I, regrettably, will be onsite at Tinker AFB all of June and July so I will be tied up.

  • Ok, so from my iPad the sporadic typing is better, but my whole comment disappeared into never never land. It was in response to the good cap’n. When I am in the mood to type the whole thing again I’ll give it another try. It probably wasn’t worth repeating anyway. We’ll see if this one makes the trip!
