2B – you’ve come to the right place for that Tom, there’s a strong anti-Ryno contingent lurking in the shadows here.

      • I don’t think it’s so much an anti-Ryno contingent as it is an anti-Ryno-as-the-Cubs-manager-at-the-present-time contingent, of which I am a member. But that doesn’t mean I’m anti-Ryno. I love him. I just don’t want him to be the coach right now.

      • Jedi

It goes beyond that with some.

I think Joe Morgan has something to do with that. He’s always been jealous of Ryno. The only year he has missed HOF Day? The year Ryno went in.

I really wish we could have a Sosa free blog

Give me nine Derrick May’s and I’ll give you the pennant. Or the end of civilization. I can never remember which.

Lizzie, am I building a team for one year or for their careers?  I mean there is a scenario where 1989 Jerome Walton and 2004 Mark Prior actually makes sense.  I opted to take guys based on their performance with the Cubs…

    Gabby Hartnett
    Mark Grace
    Ryne Sandberg
    Ernie Banks
    Ron Santo
    Billy Williams
    Hack Wilson
    Andre Dawson
    Ferguson Jenkins
    Lee Smith

    • Not really sure Jedi (this one was Joe’s idea so I’m not completely sure what he had in mind) but I think the idea was if you were to field a team today, compiled of players who were Cubs at any time, who would you choose. So in that way it seems to be more about their full careers. Joe can jump in and correct me if I’m wrong.

    • Tommy

scary how close we came to having the same dream, Jedi.

      • Jedi

I highly doubt our dreams are anything alike. 🙂

Suit yourself. Mine involves a ticker tape parade up Waveland Ave.

Sorry my formatting stinks. You know how hard it is to pick just one pitcher? I wanted to put Maddux too but his salad days were as a Brave.

I’ll counter with my Cubs nightmare team.

I repeat myself, WE STILL HAVE TOO MANY CARLOSES!

    • Jedi

      Today’s game = Vomit

      • Tommy

Kerry Wood deserves the same treatment Corey and Neifi received from this auspicious forum in years past.

      • Jedi

No, no he doesn’t.  It’s two games, and Wood has been as committed to the Cubs as any player, taking less money/fewer years on more than one occasion.  He negotiated himself into a corner this past year knowingly and willingly…I don’t like his on-field performance either – but what he’s done off-the-field and the accommodations he’s made in contract negotiations should have bought him a lot of goodwill before the fan base turns on him.

      • Seymour Butts

I don’t have an issue with Wood either. This is the declining stage of his career, and he made great accommodations to be a Cub at this time. His role this year is up in the air at present.
Hard to fault the brain-trust with trying out their closer, but if the pattern holds, you can’t possibly do any worse trying Dolis as a closer.
Give Carlos a week off, try to milk a few watchable outings out of him, and find a dum  willing trade partner. He’s killing a not as bad as expected team.

    • Tommy

Speaking of Carlos, did ya see Mr. Pena hitting a grand salami on Opening Day for his new team?

      • BLPCB

Why couldn’t he do that last year in April?

I would put Kenny Hobbs in there are second but pretty much agree with everyone else.  I would put Banks at first and Dunston at short.

    • Tommy

If Banks goes to first then my ss is Don Kessinger.

Fergie Jenkins with Phil Regan (in relief)

for this upcoming season, because I and most of you know how it’s going to end, maybe nominations for the Cubs ‘nightmare team’ by position might be more fun.

    I’ll start.

P-Anthony Young.  Lost 27 straight games.  Not all as a Cub, but still….

C-I’m going wiwth Koyie…who got a ridiculous number of AB’s for a guy that couldn’t hit the ball out of the infield.

1B-Fred Merkle.  I learn a lot from deadspin.com.  Best known for Merkle’s boner.   Doc Raker is jealous, if only of the nickname.

2b-Doug Strange.  The name says it all, in a race with at least 6 thoroughbreds…for the worst 2B.

3b-Ken Rietz.  Yes, he was a Cub.  Hard for me to admit it, too. Kevin Orie is grateful.

ss-Neifi.  Argue and I will fight you.

lf-Alf.  He’s clearly not the worst ever, but certainly the worst per dollar.

cf-Doug Dascenzo.  short, slow, no arm, no power, and couldn’t hit for average.  Your basic zero tool player.  5 career home runs, and an average of .234.  Probably the best pitcher of all the shitty Cubs who have toed the slab at garbage time.

    rf-David DeJesus.  Watch and learn.

closer/reliever-Will Ohman.  Still waiting for him to throw the ball 60 feet in the air.

manager-While I can’t blame Bruce Kimm for the mess created by Don Baylor, I also can’t blame Quade for the mess created by Hendry.  I’m going with Dusty Baker, who screwed up the most talented Cub team I can remember.  He rode Wood and Prior like a 230 lb jockey in a 400 furlong horse race, and we all lost.
