Morning News: Contracts, Injuries, and Footwear-Induced Violence

Written by , Posted in General

Strike One: Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey has been asked by the team to cancel his charity climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  The team sent Dickey a letter informing him the last year of his contract can be voided if he injures himself in the climb.  GM Sandy Alderson appears to have preemptively adopted the “mom” stance, saying the team doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but they can’t stop him.  From the Mets’ perspective, this is basically an insurance policy guarding them against the slim possibility Dickey could injure himself while they’re on the hook for $4.5M.  On the other hand, if you’re Dickey, wouldn’t an ugly tumble down the mountain be worth it to escape another season with the Mets?

Strike Two: The Vikings announced on Monday that Adrian Peterson suffered ACL and MCL tears in his left knee, and it could be between 8-10 months before he returns to the field.  His is just the latest in a rash of season-ending injuries to franchise players this season in the NFL.  My beloved Bears’ season ended when Jay Cutler broke his thumb (unleashing the blitzkrieg of Caleb Hanie interceptions).  Peyton Manning’s neck injury ended the Colts season before it began (although some would say it only made a bad team worse).  What was the most costly injury in the NFL this season?  And what was the worst one your team suffered?

Strike Three: Last Friday, Nike released a new pair of Air Jordan throwbacks.  The shoes cost $180 a pair, and were the reason for lengthy lines at shoe stores across the country.  Although each store carrying the shoe only had 150 pairs, crowds numbering in the high hundreds–even exceeding a thousand at some stores–swarmed to purchase the limited edition shoes.  In many cases across the country, those crowds turned violent when the stock ran out.  Do you know anyone who braved the angry, Black Friday-esque crowds and picked up a pair of retro Jordans?

  • Buddy

My neighbor Chuck tried to get the Air Jordans but didn’t have any luck. He bought a pair of Air B.J. Armstrongs instead.

  • Lizzie

You’re right, Jeremiah, the Mets are so bad that might be a toss up!
I’m a Colts fan so my season ended before Labor Day. My fantasy (pick ’em) league results mirrored that of the Colts. I do have a Soto-esque thing for Aaron Rodgers though so I’ve been enjoying the Packers’ success.

  • Buddy

I’m a Raiders fan, so Darren McFadden’s injury bothered me the most.

  • chris in illinois

Football doesn’t exist for me until the 2014 World Cup.

  • My local Foot Locker was out of both Jordans and Armstrongs. I ended up getting a throwback pair of Air Steve Kerrs.

  • Buddy

I had a pair of Air Greg Kites in the 1980s. They actually took a few inches off my vertical jump.

  • BLPCB

How is Manning’s injury costly? They’re going to get Andrew Luck to take over in a few years when Manning retires.

  • BLPCB

And if Martz, Lovie, and Angelo get fired, that would be a positive out of Cutler’s injury

  • Buddy

The Colts haven’t won the Luck sweepstakes just yet.

  • BLPCB

If they lose or the Rams win on Sunday, they do. Plus the Rams already have a QB, I’m sure they would trade the pick

  • Buddy

Yes. So the Rams could trade the pick to the Redskins for example, who could then draft Luck.

  • Seymour Butts

All my shoe store had left was an old pair of Air Tom Dempseys. Tough fit.

  • I’ve got a pair of Air Antonio Alfonseca gloves. Same thing…tough fit.

  • gymjok

Violence over a pair of shoes.
A sad commentary on the state of the human civilization.

  • Buddy

My Air Frodo Baggins don’t smell very good.

  • Chuck

Strike 1: I don’t blame the Mets for this stance. The team owes the player a LOT of money and it is in their best interests to make sure that players under contract aren’t taking stupid risks. That is a reason why a lot of contracts have clauses that forbid players from doing dangerous things like riding a motorcycle, playing other sports, hunting with Dick Cheney, etc…
Strike 2: The Colts will be better off in the long run by tanking this year with Manning out. If Luck is the real deal, they can trade Manning for a boatload of picks.
Strike 3: For the role Jordan played in the lockout, I will forever boycott all things Jordan. The traits that made him one of the best basketball players ever also make him a fairly despicable person.

  • BLPCB

Buddy – Don’t you think the Rams could get a better haul from the Colts, because the player they want would be there at #2?

  • Jedi

Be honest Buddy, isn’t watching the 40-yard dash at the combine the equivalent of cocaine for a Raider fan? Ah the potential…a great player has the fastest time; but then some lesser football player from a school you’ve never heard of comes and runs a FASTER time and all the sudden the Raiders rearrange their draft board.

  • Buddy

Could be. I’m also interested to see how many teams rank Griffin higher than Luck.

  • Buddy

There have been many painful draft days for me Jedi.

  • Jedi

Did you have to get a new TV after the DHB incident of 2009?

  • Buddy

Yeah, I almost died when they announced his name in the 1st round on draft day. The DHB experience has been ugly at times, but he finally seems to be putting it together this year.

  • Ugly, sure, but not nearly as ugly as Air B.J. Armstrongs.

  • Lando87

As a Rams fan, I have to say injuries are a big part of our 2-13 season, our starting 3 corners and pretty much are entire receiving core has suffered injuries all year. I just hope the Colts can upset the Jaguars this weekend so we can ransom off the #1 pick (because there is no way we’re going to get value for Bradford to take a shot at Luck)

  • BLPCB

jswanson – I once had a pair of Rodman’s designed from his Pistons days
Lando – If you’re the Rams would you consider drafting Luck and then trading him for a bootload of booty?
