Here’s a little trivia question for you on this fun Friday as we wait for the Lizzie awards to come out. Here’s hoping you won an award this week.

The first name that came to mind was Greg Maddux, but it doesn’t appear he ever got his K total that high in any one season. My next guess was Randy Johnson, and it looks like he did it in ’04. Um, that’s all I’ve got for the moment.

My five guesses were Randy Johnson, Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, Curt Schilling. I had to check my answers so I know I only had three of the five.

Maddux came to mind for me too, but he is incorrect. In his day, he was a good strikeout pitcher, but never did it. Randy Johnson is correct.

Ah… figured it out. Didn’t even think about him, which is a shame, because he is a pretty damn good pitcher.

Some more hints – he finished 8th in the CY voting that year, even though he had the 2nd most K’s, by far the fewest BB/9, 2nd highest era (among starters), the most complete games, etc.

Man, awards voters are such awful judges of performance.
