Did anyone hear about the Bradley for Vernon Wells swap rumor? Probably the biggest load of Gregg I have ever read. So we got a problem child making 20M over the next 2 years, great lets take on 100M over the next 5 years to get rid of him! I bet Chris De Luca started that rumor. I hate that guy. He is such an idiot. In February 2008, he said the Cubs would suck in 2008 unless they got Brian Roberts. If I got the paper copy of the Sun-Times with all his terrible articles, I wouldn’t need to buy toilet paper, and I would save enough money to cover the cost of subscribing and then some

I like Tom Ricketts as the owner, plus he lives in my hometown. I think he will be good, and don’t worry about succession once he dies, he’s been really busy with his wife. They have 5 kids. And Ricketts drives a Cadillac. I think they will follow the Red Sox model to make this team a perennial contender, but I don’t see how their master plan of getting everything ready for the centennial of Wrigley in 2014 will be doable unless the Cubs play somewhere else for a few seasons, something Tom doesn’t want to do.

Side note, when the Cubs won the World Series, where they played is now the West Campus of UIC. And my freshman year I lived there. So where I eat, slept, shat, and pissed used to be the site of baseball games. How crazy is that?

We certainly have a better chance with the Ricketts family than we have in my lifetime (nearly 63 years). Credit the TRIBUNE with being better owners than P.K.Wrigley, who apparently sold so much chewing gum that he didn’t give a damn about winning. Yes I am old enough to remember the College of Coaches, the sticking to day-ball only, the trade of Bill Madlock because Wrigley was a racist idiot. The TRIBUNE was better than him because he was abominable. The only Chicago owner in his category was Dollar Bill Wirtz of the Blackhawks. But the TRIB is a corporate entity and never had the ability to get out of the way of a Dallas Green and let him work. If Green had been allowed to run the Cubs, we would have won the Series 15-20 years ago.
An owner of the Cubs smart enough to model the organization after the Boston Red Sox will win. Remember the Sox make big trades and sign big money free agents, and they also have Youkilis and Pedroia and Elsbury, their fruit of their own system, powering the team. And they got Beckett and Lowell for one of their young stars, Hanley Ramirez. That is where we want to be. Soon. And this ownership makes me think we have a chance.
