I’m going to leave a full recap to Joe or one of the other writers. But I would like to comment briefly on some of the worst defensive baseball I’ve seen in quite a while. The Cubs looked like the old Keystone Cubs with Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou et al in the fourth, they did not even look like a mediocre AA team on defense. Of course when you make that many idiot plays in one inning it comes back to bite you – for the Cubs it was a blown 2-0 lead and a 4-2 deficit. I hope the Cubs go on to lose this game and go two games down to the Cards, who presently have a 5-1 lead in their game.
They need to get a cause/effect understanding for sloppy unprofessional baseball, some actual defensive practice might be beneficial too. I know that *real* professional players don’t need this but for some inexplicable reason the Japanese do it every game. Tighten up Cubbies, this is MLB baseball!

I think you need to calm down.
I developed a few complaints during the game, too. I was not happy with some of the Cubs’ fielding. I was not happy with some of the Cubs’ base running. I was not happy with some of the lineup. But the Cubbies hung on for the win. So I’ve got no complaints. All is forgiven.
In this case, one ”Atta-boy” wipes out a hundred “Aw-poopies”.
Go Cubs
imagine if Ray Guy had been a Bronco his whole career. A 55+ yard per punt avg. would have been attainable. That’s all I got from tonight’s game.
Well, sure, the defense was terrible again, but how can we be surprised at that any more? We don’t catch the ball well, don’t throw it well, and we don’t run bases well. This lack of fundamentals has stretched back several years now and shows no sign of lessening.
Where’s the “Scrappy” Theriot love? Even old Scrappy runs the bases horribly.
A win is a win. Let’s see if they can actually go 5-4 on this road trip.
Cubs have made 3 errors so far in today’s game. I haven’t seen them, but it sure seems ugly! Defensively, their DER of .7212 is 3rd in MLB, so they’re making most of the plays they should. But it sure seems like they make a lot of extra outs on the bases. Is there a stat for that? Has anyone studied “stupid running plays” or “extra outs given on the bases?”
I think both games were kinda ugly except that yesterday we won so as cubbiedude says all is forgiven. Today not so much.
Hey Dave Beyer, how you doing dude!
