From now until opening day, I’d like to project what my opening day roster would look like based on what we have in house. Here is version one.

Starting Rotation

  1. Carlos Zambrano
  2. Ryan Dempster
  3. Ted Lilly
  4. Rich Harden
  5. Sean Marshall

Bullpen

  1. Carlos Marmol
  2. Kevin Gregg
  3. Neal Cotts
  4. Luis Vizcaino
  5. Michael Wuertz
  6. Aaron Heilman
  7. Chad Gaudin

Catchers

  1. Geovany Soto
  2. Paul Bako

Infielders

  1. Mike Fontenot
  2. Aramis Ramirez
  3. Derrek Lee
  4. Aaron Miles
  5. Ryan Theriot
  6. Micah Hoffpauir

Outfielders

  1. Alfonso Soriano
  2. Reed Johnson
  3. Kosuke Fukudome
  4. Milton Bradley
  5. Joey Gathright

Notables Who Missed the Cut

  1. Angel Guzman – He’s out of options so something would need to be done with him. I don’t see him having a future here.
  2. Rich Hill – Should be packing for Baltimore as we speak
  3. David Patton – No room for the kid on the big league roster so unless he has a crazy, lights-out spring, he’s going to be the typical rule 5 casualty.
  4. Sam Fuld – He appears to be a flash in the pan from when he lit up the AFL two off-seasons ago. Maybe he’ll take a step forward this year.

Tomorrow we’ll take a look at that 25 man roster and examine if it really is better than last year’s playoff roster.
