VFTB

We are not going to win them all. They had their chances. They had opportunities, but were not able to finish the Jays off. Let’s brush it off and get the next two.

Comcast was glad to show us Jays Starting pitcher Burnett tipping his hat to the crowd as he was booed off his last game. If we are paying upwards of $50 to go to a game, I believe that we have the right to express our angst when one of our players does not produce. Obviously there are limits to this, but that’s the game of baseball. Suck it up and walk off the field in shame. And most of the time, that shame is soon forgotten because these same booing fans are now standing up and cheering for you. I would take those odds. No one cheers when I do my job…but then again no one boos me…

The DH..To Like or not to like? Len and Bob were discussing what players do as they wait for their next at-bat. What would you do to keep yourself busy as a DH. It would surely make my decision to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G much easier to rationalize. You could watch movies, play some video games, or catch your favorite episode of Family Guy. What would you do? How would you keep yourself focused? After watching my first interleague game of the year, I realize that the pitcher changes, and double switches truly make my gut churn during many of the games. At least for these games, my stress is purely related to lack of solid play.

Well it appears that we won’t have to wait til next year to see how Instant Replay goes over. MLB announced that it will begin a trial run on August 1st. I am complete support of this, because it appears that Umpire judgment has been especially poor this year. People have commented that it would slow the game down, take away the human element, and I say…”see ya then”…Let’s try and figure out how much time it takes for Lou to argue…for Big Z to calm himself after a blown call…Let’s give it a try and see how much it truly helps…or hinders..

During the 6th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Edmonds hit a ground ball up in the middle, it hits the ump, and according to MLB rules, the runners are only allowed to advance one base. This cost us one run for sure, Fukudome would have easily scored. But I do not blame the Ump because with bases loaded and no out, one run in just not acceptable. DeRosa continues to prove why he is the Anti-Jordan. And by this I mean, when the chips are stacked, Jordan always came through. Don’t get me wrong, I think he is a great ballplayer, and he has produced this year, however his inability to produce in clutch situations can come to haunt us. (anyone remember game 3 last year)

And I will end my little wrap up by saying how truly impressed I was with these Toronto fans. It was really great to see Johnson get a standing ovation in the 9th…you really don’t see that too often…Props to you Toronto…but lets hope they have nothing to cheer about for the next two days….

Go Cubs…

Inning-by-Inning Recap

1st - Great AB by Ramirez. Cubbies get Burnett to throw 32 pitches. Gallagher gets through the 1st with ease. (0-0)

2nd - Cubs go down 1-2-3. Very nice catch by Edmonds. (0-0)

3rd - Again 1-2-3 and down the Cubbies go. I hate back-to-back homeruns. Only down three though. This game is far from over. (0-3)

4th - Edmonds continues to provide a spark. but we only get 1. Gallagher rebounds from his poor prior inning.(1-3)

5th - Erik Patterson needs to be sent packing. Not a big fan. He K’s for the 2nd time. We leave two on. 1-2-3 for Gallagher.(1-3)

6th - Bases Loaded with no outs. Ump hit by ball at 2nd cost us run. DeRosa the anti-clutch. Patterson pushes Fukudome home. Damn the DP. Jays threaten but Barajas is out at home. I thought that they were showing that in slow motion because Damn he was moving slow. Gallagher continues to lack the ability to go long in a game. Let’s just hope that this is due to his recent placement in the rotation. (2-3)

7th - Rough night for Hoffpauir. Quick inning for Wuertz. (2-3)

8th - A lead off single goes no where. Eyre replaces Wuertz and keeps us within a run. (2-3)

9th - Cubs can’t pick up the come from behind in this one. (2-3)

I meant to post this earlier, but who thinks Fonzie’s hit by pitch in Wednesday night’s game was retalliation? I think it was definelely retalliation. After all, Fonzie was the one posing last year in Atlanta when he had like 3 home runs that one game. The pitch during the previous game that sailed over Brian McCann’s head just added fuel to the fire.

I will be watching closely over the next few games to see how our offense (albeit without Soriano) hits off of some of the AL’s better pitchers. AJ Burnett tonight, R. Halladay Saturday, J. Litsch Sunday, S. Kazmir Monday. If we can finish our interleague play over .500 that will be encouraging. On the flip side I will be worried if we play Toronto, Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Chicago (AL) and don’t play well.

I want to know WHO’S idea it was to pitch Rolen three straight fastballs down the middle? There’s your difference.

The NYTimes had a story in Saturday’s edition about Kerry Wood that repeated one of the worst distortions in the history of baseball — and the reason why all Cubs fans should be ashamed of themselves for blaming a fan for anything. Sports Writer Jack Curry wrote about that magical moment in 2003 when a fan maybe/almost interfered with a foul ball and EIGHT runs scored. For the real story, go to marlinsmaniacs.blogspot.com
