So here we are, June 1st a mere few hours away and our lovable losers are no longer losers. It has been 100 years since our boys in blue have had the best record in all of baseball heading into June…If we were New Yorkers or Bostonians, we would surely be planning ahead and penciling in October baseball…but we are not…We are Cubs fans…We are realistic, yet hopeful…We are optimistic, yet cautious… So when can we start to get excited…when can we start to expect more wins then losses…When can we walk with the confidence that New Yorkers and Bostonians seem to possess?
So who is ready to jump in the car and travel from city to city in hopes of providing a sense of home for our boys when they are on the road…Not since 1977 have the Cubs been so dominant at home…but we really need to take this confidence and determination on the road with us…I do believe that all we need is a great road trip, and then that’s it…lights out…How do you think we can accomplish a successful road trip?
And how about the “Ladies Man” singing the 7th inning stretch….Personally I think it would have been much cooler had he sung it as the “Ladies Man”
So let me ask you this, who would you pick to sing the 7th inning stretch…and please, use your imagination?
And one more little thing…Many Cubs forums have had posts in regards to the offensive Fukudome shirts that our being sold outside of Wrigley. The shirts depict a Cubby Logo imprinted with “Horry Kow”…Fukudome even stated that he did not think that those who made the shirt depicted a negative racial stereotype, and asked them to make it right…So why do I bring this up, because after attending many games this year, I still see this shirt on sale…I still see people buying them, and even wearing them in the bleachers…So Cubs fans, lets make this right…
We are conducting a survey at the end of our posts as well…So if you have a minute, please check it out…We want your opinion…let us know what you think…
Inning by inning notes
1st - Dempster was able to brush off two walks. Cubs get a few on, but can’t get anyone across the plate. (0-0)
2nd - Another highlight catch by Reed Johnson in center. Johnson continues to impress with his defense. Umpire pulls a hamstring on an appeal call to first. Now I thought I was out of shape, but come on… Colorado gets on the board first with a 2 run HR. Dempster gets a big double. Soriano gives us the lead right back. (3-2)
3rd - Dempster continues to struggle with his command, however he regains his composure and the Rox strand two… Soto gets his 38th RBI of the season. (4-2)
4th - Nice to see Demp go 1-2-3. Reed continues to impress. Soriano gets his 3rd RBI of the day. (5-2)
5th - Demp gives up a solo HR. DeRo remains the solo Cubbie without a hit. (5-3)
6th - Wuertz replaces Demp and goes 1-2-3. Stewart makes a great defensive play to cost the Cubs a Run. Cubs leave one. (5-3)
7th - Cotts replaces Wuertz and he too goes 1-2-3. The Ladies Man sings the 7th inning stretch, however it does not bring our bats any luck. (5-3)
8th - Howry inherits one on and one out. Rox leave another one stranded. We get load the bases, however D. Lee can’t come through. (5-3)
9th - Marmol in to close. What an amazing catch by Fukudome….WOW…Marmol gives up a solo HR. But then 3 nasty pitches give us a big W….(5-4)

The shirts are offernsive. I feared it was going to be a play on his name glad it wasn’t that.
Anyone changing their mind about Reed Johnson?
Baseball Tonight totally blew off the Cubs last night, spending all theuir time on mediocre teams, a mock re-draft of 2003 (or was it 2005?) and of course they wet themselves oozing about Manny Ramirez.
Sometimes I cannot stand ESPN.

Did Lou pull AFonz out in the late innings for Edmonds? If so, then that was a smart move.

Yeah. I thought Lou had been dismissive of the idea of a defensive replacement for Alfonso in the late innings. But yesterday Lou blinked and Alfonso came out.
And the ninth inning did require a good outfield catch, just from the right fielder…

They pulled him out because he fouled a ball off his foot last at-bat and to get the double switch, even though it was in the late innings. I don’t think Lou will ever do that again. In his postgame press conference, Lou sounded like it was a precautionery thing.

The “Ladies Man” during the 7th inning was pretty good. His Sammy Davis impression while he called a play was funny.
I would have to say I think a “Take me out to the ballgame” by Bono would be pretty cool.
The Red Sox are ESPN’s home team. I get it, I just wish they wouldn’t make quite so obvious. Are they breaking into all their broadcasts to show Ken Griffey’s at bats while he trys to hit SIX HUNDRED or just Manny’s while he tries to hit a mere five hundred.
Go Cubs…This is really fun to watch. Like Bob Brenley said on air after the eight run come from behind win agains the Rockies. Not only are the Cubs winning the games they should but now there winning the games that they shouldn’t.
