Max Scherzer made his Major League debut on April 29 and set the baseball world buzzing as he retired all 13 batters he faced in relief of Edgar Gonzalez. Scherzer, who was the team’s No. 1 pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, struck out seven and his electric fastball reached 98 mph at times during the dominating performance. The D-backs put Scherzer in the rotation in place of Gonzalez and he struggled a bit in his first start against the Phillies, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings.
Ryan Dempster is coming off his first loss of the season. He was charged with five runs — none earned — on four hits over six innings against the Reds. The right-hander is the first Cubs pitcher to give up at least five unearned runs and no earned runs since Greg Hibbard was charged with six runs, all unearned, on July 11, 1993, against Houston. Dempster did strike out a season-high seven, but the Reds took advantage of two errors by the Cubs for the win.
