Ted Lilly – Lilly was cruising through the first three innings of his last start against the Pirates, then threw 35 pitches to eight batters in the fourth before he was pulled. What was mystifying was that he had a 7-0 lead at the time. Lilly was charged with five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. He’s 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two career starts against the Phillies. Manager Lou Piniella thinks Lilly needs to speed things up; Lilly thinks he needs to slow down. We’ll see who wins.
Cole Hammels – Hamels continued his dominance of the Reds at Great American Ball Park with seven strong innings Monday afternoon. The left-hander allowed just one earned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out four in a 100-pitch outing. Hamels made a stellar effort in his 2008 debut but came on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss to Washington. He was brilliant save for a shaky first inning and a homer allowed to Ryan Zimmerman.
- Has a fantastic change-up that makes his darting low-90′s heat look even hotter. Also has a good curve ball. Keeps his cool in pressure situations.
- Had injury problems rising up the ladder, so there are still concerns. Must do a better job of keeping the ball in the ball park, especially at home.
- One of the top left-handers in baseball.
