Scouting Report on Today’s Starting Pitchers

Carlos Zambrano – Zambrano had no problems with cramps in his last start. Big Z struck out seven and gave up seven hits over seven innings against the Astros last Sunday. He did not walk a batter, and has issued one walk in his first two games. That’s a significant improvement. Zambrano was better on the road than at home last season; let’s see if that continues. In 2007, he was 12-4 with a 3.06 ERA away from home, and 6-9 with a 4.96 ERA at Wrigley. He did not face the Phillies last season.

Brett Myers – Myers is still trying to find himself after lasting just five innings in each of his first two outings. The righty said he didn’t have his best stuff in his first start, then had his best stuff the next time, but still couldn’t get any outs. He suspects that he may be tipping pitches. He made his Major League debut against the Cubs on July 24, 2002, and is 5-3 with a save and a 2.53 ERA against them in 11 career appearances.

  • A confident righty, he can change speeds effectively with two- and four-seam fastballs into the 90’s. Has a terrific curveball plenty of endurance.
  • Can get rattled on the mound if he doesn’t keep his emotions in check. Must find his niche, after going from the rotation to the bullpen–and back.
  • A solid No. 2 starter or late-inning reliever.
