First Star - Jason Bay
Second Star – Ryan Dempster
Third Star – Adam LaRoche
Second Star – Ryan Dempster
Third Star – Adam LaRoche
In case you hadn’t noticed, there seems to be a theme with the titles for the last two recaps. Last night, I was pretty jacked up about the fact that Dempster was pitching great and the game appeared to be headed for an early finish. Instead, I ended up retiring for the evening after the top of the 13th so I missed all the action. With that being said, I’d like to pose to you a question.
What kind of style do you like the game recaps to be in? For example, here are some styles I’ve tried in the past.
- Retelling what happened, with my commentary mixed in
- Picking X amount of topics and talking about them
- Bulleted notes
Lately I’ve been wrestling with the idea of doing a bulleted notes concept, but for players that are significant in the game. What I would do is sit with my laptop in front of me for the game and add bullets under a player’s name during the game when I see something worth noting. What are your thoughts on that? Any feedback would be great, because this site is not for me, but for you.

The bulleted notes would be fine.
Two comments: (1) Dempster should have been the first star. A solid, dominating performance for a team in need of one. The Bay HR would have been meaningless if any of several Cub batters had produced in situations that could have added runs. (2) The rally you missed was built around clean singles by Ryan Theriot and Felix Pie. When Pie hits a liner to left-center, he has a chance to be a player. When he pulls the ball, he reminds me too much of an earlier #20 named Corey Patterson.
Agree with the bulleted notes.
Thanks Joe.
Dempster should have been the first star.
The “stars” are not made up in Joe’s head. They are based off of “win probability added” (WPA), which is a stat that analyzes which player’s performance increased the team’s chance of winning the greatest.
I like bulleted points Joe, but that’s how I do my notes for my recaps. So what may be good for me, may not work for you.
When I went into the gym last night to play some b-ball it was 1-0. Little did I know that when I came out, they’d still be playing. Nothing like hoping into the car and immediatley hearing Ron crying about having left 12 men on base.
I like the bulleted notes idea. We can get a recap of the action at cubs.com, but personally I come here for player analysis.
Thanks for your time, everyone who posts here!
I agree with bulleted points!
I cant believe that not everyone isnt circling arond Dempsters performance so far this year. I know that everyone was as nervous as I was to have him in the rotation and figured by this time he would be makin his move back to the pen. Looked great so far, and its great to see a guy like Big Z high five and smile to him first as Demp comes back to the dugout. With that being said no W in the column for him, but if anyone can understand Woody blowin that save and loosing the win for him its Demp. Lets actually if we can score a couple of big runs early and put this one away today and stay out of extras…
I too like the bulleted notes of the game.
Bulleted works great. Do whatever is easiest for you. We just appreciate your work.
I am VERY pleasantly surprised at Dempster as well. I have been a Cubs fan long enough to expect the bloom to come off of the rose in June, but for now, it is nice…
I think it should be noted that while Kerry gave up the homer on pretty terrible pitch, he did bounce back and dominate the rest of the inning. The reason this is important is that it shows mental toughness, and the ability to focus on the moment. He’s going to be just fine if he progresses like this… and throws strikes!
And just so you know, I say this while having both Dempster and Wood starting on my fantasy team. That blown save really stung.
I don’t mind Wood getting beat by the homer run ball. The walks kill and as long as he has good control he will make me feel more comfortable than I have in years past. Its good to see the Cubs winning the close games again, but its going to give me a heart attack if they keep making the games more difficult to win then they should be.
Wood made one mistake that inning and they capitalized. That’s all there is to it. He was pretty nasty the rest of the inning. No worries at all here.
Dempster threw great and he gets his praise. But lets not over react here, its 2 starts out of a potential 32.
Maybe I’m the only one, but I’ve always liked the game recaps. I know once I start getting busy during the summer, I don’t always catch the game. Your recaps always sound exactly how I would describe the game to someone, so when I miss a game, I know I can get an accurate description here.
I’m going to try something today and would like some feedback after the game for the recap, Gordon.
Folks come here for all sotts of reasons. Some for recaps, some for bulleted notes, some may even come around for opposing team’s radio analysis (not as likely, I know but gimme a break).
So all I’m saying is, it’s all good. It’s like a wonderful salad bar. Something here for everybody but everybody doesn’t eat every item on the salad bar.
What if you don’t eat salad?
