Stars of the Game
1st: Kosuke Fukudome
2nd: Ryan Dempster
3rd: Aramis Ramirez
There, see, you can now come down off the ledge and realize that everything is going to be fine. Everything people were worried about took care of itself today. The offense produced some runs and not just via the home run. The top of the order produced some offense. The starting pitching did what we needed it to do and even Woody picked up a nice save to close out the series. Case closed. Bring on Houston. On to the notes:
- I really felt like it was going to be a sweep when Weeks led off the game with a walk, prototypical Dempster pitching though the pitch for ball four was just slightly off the plate and probably could have been called a stike if it was later in the game and Dempster had established that part of the plate, and then Gwynn doubled him home. Thankfully, Dempster settled down and retired batters effectively from then on. Overall, I thought he looked about as good as one can hope for from a guy that hasn’t pitched in the rotation in quite some time. I think he’ll be just fine. I know a lot of people worry about the tendency to walk hitters early in an inning, but my assumption is that it is a problem that occurs due to the fact that he’s only had one inning to come in and get the job done. When you’re coming in as a starter instead, you tend to relax a little more and know that you can give up a run or two and not feel like a failure. Because of that, he doesn’t have to be as perfect and can settle into a groove similar to what he did today.
- I mentioned yesterday that I felt we would pay in some way for the fact that Fatty got plunked twice in the same game yesterday. I really thought it would come in the form of a hit by pitch, and I guess you can make the claim that both Pie and DeRosa did get hit today. However, I don’t feel like those were intentional as payment for the Fatty plunkings. If anything, I would argue that Gwynn running over Geo like he did in the 1st would be more retribution for the earlier plunkings. Overall, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of this.
- If you read this site last year you know that one of my biggest pet peaves about pitchers is when they reach their pitching hand out to try to field comebackers to the mound. Zambrano is a huge culprit with it and today Dempster did it. Most of the time, when Zambrano reaches out, it’s a pretty good shot back up the middle. Today’s play was a pretty easy play too field so I wasn’t too worried about it. I just wish it wasn’t the natural instinct of pitchers to reach their non-glove hand out to try to keep the ball from going back up the middle.
- The more I watch Fukudome the more I realize that he’s the real deal. He may not hit 30 home runs or steal 50 bases, but I really believe he’ll lead this team in walks, hits, and possibly steals if Theriot and Soriano don’t get on base as much. Len mentioned during the game that it always seems like he’s either swinging at the first pitch he sees or working the count to 3-2. He’s got great patience and a great eye.
- I’m beginning to be a Geo believer. I have harbored the idea that last year’s breakout was more due to fluke than adjustments at the plate. However, he seems to be showing good power at the plate, with his hit today being out of the park on any other day than today. I really could see him hitting 20+ this year.
- Pie got on base twice in four plate appearances. Good enough to cut him a break for now? He also stole a base, easily if I say so myself.
- I’ve been quite pleased with Mike Fontenot off the bench so far. Today he picked up a double and came around to score on Soriano’s single.
- You know your pitcher probably isn’t the best at the plate when he’s standing just outside the box taking practice swings and drops his bat. Dempster did just that and looked silly doing it. Poor guy has to get back in the groove now that he’s actually going to be called on to hit.
Overall, not the start I wanted from this team, but with an Astros team with less than impressive starters in their rotation, we have a series coming up that can certainly be swept if we play the way we played today.

A nice all around game. I’m so glad to see that D. Lee can still strike the ball with authority, I was a bit worried after last year and the wrist injury and all. Soto is suggesting that he is for real, and ‘the Riot’ is the spark plug I always new he’d be.
Honesty, I do wish he was our utility guy, but hey, you do what you gotta do… But my point is that if this line-up should be really good, and its obvious why Hendry considered selling the farm to get Roberts. If you put a real leadoff hitter in front of this crew, with Fukedome hitting second, and Fonzi hitting 4th or 5th like he should be (assuming his fragile psyche could handle it), this is a lineup to Rival the best in the American league.
Regardless, you got to like the Cubbies this year. It should be fun.
Stars of the Game:
1) FUKU- Yup, even more so than Dempster today. We know we have good pitching but the missing link has been our ability to manufacture runs. He ignited the first two run rally with the double and started the second with the walk and the steal. So far he’s demonstrated to me that he’s got all five tools- hits for average, hits for power, has speed, can throw, and plays good denfense. Also, his patience at the plate seems to be rubbing off on our other players. Hendry’s looking like a genius now.
2)DEMP – Wow! I was expecting the worst but was thoroughly impressed with Demp today! He had good command and looked really confident on the mound! (not at the plate however…lol). I liked his demeanor, his presence and it looks like all his off-season work is really paying off! I was also impressed with the movement on his pitches; something sorely lacking last season. Now he just needs to practice laying down a bunt. Great start Demp!
3)A-RAM – Nice to see our MVP get things started with that 8-iron blast! He’s off to a bit of a slow start but I’m not the least bit concerned. Rammy is a STUD!
*On a side note, how ’bout Fatty’s new look today? (you’re right Joe… with an F, NOT a PH!). Who the hell dresses this guy in the morning? He looks like a friggin’ circus-clown!
Who has the biggest swing in the current lineup?
I think it is Pie. That’s not a good thing for a guy with little power. Felix looked terrible swinging at that pitch at his shoulders. He is hurting Soto, at this point. Geo doesn’t get many good pitches to swing at.
I’m all for experiments, but I bet Pie will be riding the pine soon.
Reed’s first at bat: Off the wall double!! You Pie-nuthuggers need to get over it! Pie’s useless offensively and we don’t have time to groom him! Next season is NOW!
D’oh! Pie kills a potential game winning rally with a weak grounder.
WoW! Top of the 9th and Lou has Fonzi playing 2nd and Ward in LF. I think he’s pissed.
Fonzi handled 2 grounders nicely…lol.
Bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, Pie at bat. He flies out.
Game over.
I’m glad you can take pleasure in Pie not coming through, though clearly the reason we lose this game is because of a lack of defense.
And while I’ll continue to point out the obvious… namely defense really matters over the long haul, especially if you want to win THIS YEAR, and offensive production out of the 8 hole isn’t going to make or break this season.
Regardless, I thought Pie had a pretty good at bat against a fairly nasty lefty specialist in this game. And what’s his average again? .300 or something… what were we talking about again?
Actually, it was .273 before the game… an Oh fer drops it to mendoza line, only accentuating how silly this conversation is this early in the season.
Pie at .300? He’s batting .231 with 4 strikeouts and no mulit-base hits (and no clutch hits either). He’s just mindlessly flailing away at bad pitches (late on every fastball today) and taking good pitches. We need offense!
I just don’t get this obsession with Pie. He may pan out after a few years but we need production NOW! That’s my point! Start Reed!
Adam,
don’t forget that Reed was released by Toronto. He didn’t even have enough value for a trade. He’s not the answer on a full time basis.
And Jerious, you’re way off the mark in suggesting I take pleasure in Pie struggling. I want the Cubs to win damnit and to do that, we need to eliminate that glaring weakness. I could care less who wins this debate/argument, I just want the Cubs to win!
Jerious and Joe…Have you guys been going to the Cheney-Rumsfeld School of Reality? Don’t worry, everything will be fine?
And as another poster mentioned, Pie has shown no flashes of brilliance or potential that warrants us starting him and grooming him.
Jerious: “Clearly the reason we lose this game is because of a lack of defense”. Not according to Lou. In his postgame interview, he was frustrated at the lack of OFFENSE and stated the we NEED to score 5-6 runs to win on a regular basis. Yes, we made defensive gaffes but bottom line is, we ain’t gonna win games scoring 2-3 runs.
Soriano is hitting .059, Lee is hitting .222, Aram is hitting .154, Soto is hitting .167, “The Riot” is hitting .222
You think Lou might be referring to the non-23 year old, multi billionaires of the lineup
Look, I don’t blame you. I’m ashamed at myself at trying to reason with you, and carrying on the argument. For all I know, you’re 14 and have been watching baseball for two years.
My bad.
Jerious, you’re argument is weak and lacks cogency. You’re comparing All-Stars like Fonzi, Lee, and A-Ram to…Pie? Gimme a break! I’ll give you The Riot but you have got to come up with something better than that! Soto? This guy has serious power, makes contact, and most importantly, HAS shown flashes of brilliance!
Jerious, you’re writing is weak and so are your attempts at personal attacks…lol. BTW, I’m actually 15 yo. and I’ve been watching baseball for 3 yrs.
Lacks cogency? That’s so cute.
“Jerious, you’re just a silly and pretentious dork!”
You’re all grown up and got a thesaurus. I’m very proud.
Joe,
I got a suggestion…..you need to add an 11th Commandment to the site:
XI – Those young Cubs players who have not been selected as an All-Star nor shown signs of brilliance and who have not maintained at least a .300 average nor had a game winning hit withing the first 4 games of any season shall for the remainder of the season be banished to riding the pine, or shall be demoted to the minors…..which ever appeases Cubs fans the most.
Wow, I get to post these twice in one day. Take note people. Some of you have been warned before. Let’s try and keep these civil.
I. Thou Shall Not Use Profanity
II. Thou Shall Not personally attack other commenters
III. Thou Shall Not bait other commenters
IV. Thou Shall Not argue for the sake of arguing
V. Thou Shall Not discuss politics
VI. Thou Shall Not use hyperbole when something less will suffice
VII. Thou Shall Not use sarcasm in a way that can be misinterpreted negatively
VIII. Thou Shall Not make the same point over and over again
IX. Thou Shall Not type “no-hitter” to describe any no-hitter in progress
X. Thou Shall Not be annoyed by the existence of this list
Man, if it’s like this now, just wait til the temperature rises to the 80’s and 90’s. I’m talking about the comments, not the players.
I just noticed that you put this up. I think the only commandments that I’ll have a problem adhering to are #’s 2,3,4,6,7… maybe 8, and definitely 10.
Jerious, you’ve been here long enough to know that our arguments….ahem, discussions…..are civil.
I’m seriously not thrilled with the new attitude being displayed lately. We’re all allowed to have opinions, but let’s do it constructively.
