Spotlight on Jake Fox (Player Page) – Fox has played decent this season at the AA level and has shown his versatility in playing LF, RF, 1B, and C all in the month of July alone. Fox was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft. and spent time both at the rookie level and A level after signing. He’s never been particularly overwhelming at any level he’s been so far and is currently repeating AA. His versatility has been his biggest asset to date. He doesn’t have a great command of the strike zone at the plate and strikes out more than he should. He doesn’t draw enough walks, considering he’s playing against pitches with a propensity for wildness and doesn’t show consistent power. I’m not a big fan of Jake Fox. I think he’s overrated by a lot of Cub fans. My guess is that he won’t be a productive ML player.
John Sickels had the following to say about Fox in his prospect book (buy the book)
The Cubs drafted Jake Fox in the 3rd round in 2003, from the University of Michigan. He has a strong bat, with plus power to all fields. His strike zone judgement is not the best, and not how his BB / K/ AB ratio have deteriorated after his promotion to Double-A last year. He’ll have to improve that if he wants to hit consistently well at the Major League level. Fox has worked hard to sharpen his glovework, which is now average; not great, but good enough for him to play if he hits. I think his power will carry forward, but hitting higher than .250 in the Show might be tough for him, and his OBP would not be impressive. Grade: C+

What is going on in the world today? Piniella called up Fox. (Did someone get sent down?) AND…wait for it…Barry Bonds will be playing.
Murton with a 2-4 day with a double and a walk. Thataboy.
Wait, Fox got called up? I assume he’ll start today?
Hopefully Lou doesn’t decide to let him hit third like he did for Ward. This ought to be an interesting day.
The Cubs traded shortstop Cesar Izturis to Pittsburgh on Thursday for a player to be named later. It was the other shoe to drop following the Cubs calling up Jake Fox. The Pirates also received cash in the deal.
So, Joe was the writeup of Fox a coincidence?
I’ll never tell. =)
so that izturis-maddux trade turned out pretty good for hendry
What message does say to Murton? They call up a AA guy instead of a AAA. Yikes. I’m betting Murton gets moved.
We really like having three catchers I guess? I really am not seeing why (even with Fox being able to play the corner outfield slots) we didn’t give Cedeno or someone else another shot…
I hope Murton doesn’t get moved, that would really crush my sister’s hopes and dreams… haha
Fox is getting shot for a couple reasons:
1) He has versatility and can play 1b, LF, RF, and C. This comes in handy with Lee on the shelf for 4 more games.
2) He’s hitting very well this year
3) Lou likes his fire stemming back from Spring training when Fox boldly went up to Lou and asked why he wasn’t getting his chance to play and prove himself.
Cedeno? Brother please, keep that iron handed no talent hack in Iowa. He’s an error machine.
POS?
Possibly Overrated Shortstop?
Kidding. Kind of.
I agree with your sentiment, but a piece of #&%@ might be a little harsh.
Edited just for you Tony.
