Two Things That Are Bugging Me

Friday, January 9th, 2004

I wanted to take this time to talk about two things that have nothing to do with Cub’s baseball at all. First, as most of you all know, I am a Fighting Illini basketball fan. It makes me mad when they don’t play up to their potential. The other day, they had a game at home against an unranked Illinois State team. It was the first game back for Deron Williams and was picked to not really be all that close. Well, it turns out that the team has to pull it out of their butts in overtime. At halftime though Bruce Weber goes crazy on the players especially Nick Smith. Apparently big dumb Nick was and has been taking opponents too lightly. He talks junk about them and how they aren’t really good. As a result, the rest of the team starts to feel the same way and teams like ISU make it a good game. It just really bugs me that he is the one on the team that would be taking teams and players lightly. He isn’t very good. Usually it would be the star of the team that would think like this, not a guy that isn’t even a starter. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen him play, but he is a big oaf. He is like 7’2″ and just doesn’t seem to know how to put it all together. There are days when he gets in the zone and days that he can’t seem to do anything right. So Nick, until you get it all together, Shut your mouth and play Basketball.

The second thing that bugs me is the fact that Chicago Bears fans immortalize certain players that when you look at their numbers, we not really that good. The one that sticks out for me the most is Jim McMahon. This guy was so delicate. He always got injured. Jim’s career bests for the following categories: Yards – 2392 (1985), TD’s – 15, games played – 14 (1983). This guy was no better than Jim Miller. Why do you people love him so much. The only thing that I could see is because they won the Super Bowl. But everyone knows that they won that year because of their defense. Willie Gault is another one. The man never had a 1000 yard season and the year they won it all, he had one TD in the regular season. They were not that good. Get a clue people. Alright, now that I got that off my chest, I am gonna end this.

I don’t really even know why those two things bug me that much. For all I know, most people could feel the same way, but it just seems like people idolize those two guys.

Cubs Talk

Wednesday, January 7th, 2004

One of the sites that I check a lot for stories and news on the Cubs is Cubs Talk. All that site is though is a bunch of Cub fans who have taken it upon themselves to become “columnists” covering the Cubs. Isn’t that what we as the Cubs Blog Army is doing? I think it is. So, I would like to see if we could get hooked up with Cub’s talk and see if we could get some representation on their site and maybe eventually with the Cubs Official site. I think if MLB is trying to get the fans interested and boost interest in baseball in general, one of the good ideas is to value quality fans. Fans that stick with their teams and know baseball. Fans who go to the game and even if they do not keep score, know how. Fans that have been with their team through the good times or bad. To me, that is what the Army is about. We’re just a bunch of quality fans who want nothing more than to see our team win that dumb looking trophy with all the flags. I would like to see Cubs blogging and blogging in general begin to get noticed a little more.

We all have our favorite blogs that we read. There are a number of reasons why they are our favorite. For some of the sites, we like them because they offer us a lot of good information relatively quickly and painlessly. Others, seem to have sarcasms or brutal honesty laced in their writing. Whatever the reason, each author or writer brings their own unique flair to their site and that is what makes it good. Maybe I’m just babbling but I think we have a lot of quality writers with some quality things to say. There should be some way to make those words heard by more than our loyal blog army readers.

On a side note ~ I have added some new links to some good blogs written by the enemy. I have tried to pick ones that have good things to say and also update fairly regularly so give them a look. Also, I would like to welcome two new additions to my Cubs Blog Army links. Welcome to North of Wrigley Field & Cubs Rants

~Update~ 4:02pm Apparently, according to Fanball, the Diamondbacks signed Todd Walker, not the Cubs. What idiots!!!!! Check out the link and look down in the second basemen section!!!

New Year, No New News

Monday, January 5th, 2004

I can’t tell you how bored I am lately with baseball news, probably because there isn’t any. All we keep hearing about is stupid Pete Rose. I hate to comment about this but here is my feeling on it. I think he should be elected to the Hall of Fame as a player because he was a good one and it was as a manager that he made his mistakes. I do feel like he should be banned from doing anything more with baseball though. Just allow him to be inducted as a player and let it be over. For some reason I have a hard time believing that he is truly sorry and misses the game that much. I mean, if I knew there was a risk of losing something that I love by doing something stupid, I wouldn’t do it. He should have thought that through. At this point though, just do something and get him out of the news.

In other news, my wife and I bought TiVo the other day, and I must say it is pretty cool. For those who do not know what it can do for your sports watching capabilities, check it out. I highly recommend it. Needless to say, I will not miss any Cubs games that come on WGN this year. It used to be a pain in the butt because I would set my tape and not want to see the score. So, I would have my wife check to see if the game was over, but have her swear she would not tell me any information at all. Now, with TiVo, I can set a recording of the game and not have to wait until it is over to start watching. I can watch from the beginning and Tivo is still recording the whole thing. So, basically the games start when I want, not when the Cubs want. Check it out guys, it’s very cool. That’s about all for now. The battle of the Blogs is going quite well. I am going to cut the voting in a few days and set up the final. Thanks again to everyone who has voted. Be sure to read all the other blogs on my links because they are all a lot better than mine.

Tagline – Don’t Go in the water (Name that movie!!!)
