Game 79 & 80 – Double Dose of Crap

The Cubs sucked up the joint royally by sending two starting pitchers, Doug Davis and Rodrigo Lopez, and a reliever, John Grabow, to the mound that should be watching the games from their living rooms. The end result is a day night double header sweep for the defending World Series champions. But hey, our manager is an All Star. It’s time to pull the plug. This team is dead.

Say it ain't so!

Today Ted Lilly underwent debridement surgery on his pitching shoulder. It appears as though he will not be ready in time for Opening Day and I’m wondering what (if anything) we will get out of Lilly next year. Shoulder injuries are a different breed of cat compared to elbow issues – some guys never really come back afterwards (e.g. Mark Prior) and others come back missing 5 mph on their fastball (e.g. Bobby Brownlie.) Cubs sign Jaramillo

Today the Cubs signed the best hitting instructor available to a three-year contract. I think this is a positive move because it shows that the club realizes a specific weakness and it is taking concrete steps to try to rectify things. At the same time I have to recognize that just changing management personnel won’t be a magic wand either. Soto, Fontenot, Theriot and Soriano had major drop-offs in production – each of these guys is going to have to step it up if they are to rebound in 2010.
