Two Non-Roster Names to Watch

Written by , Posted in General

Pitchers and catches officially report for duty today, which signals the official beginning to spring training. As we head toward the start of the exhibition schedule, I wanted to point your attention to a couple non-roster invitees that have an outside chance of making the opening day roster and what needs to happen to get them there.

Chris Gimenez – C

Gimenez signed a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp last month, which led some to speculate that a Yu Darvish signing was going to be announced as well. It took a little while, but we got the Darvish news.

Currently the Cubs have just two catchers on the 40 man roster (Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini). While the Cubs like what they have in Caratini, he’s young and could benefit from additional experience at the AAA level. Theo and Jed tend to want guys to get seasoned down there before making an impact at the ML level. Given the fact that Contreras is cemented into the starting role, someone like Gimenez seems to fit right in as the backup. He’s got ML experience and at this point in his career would be happy with that backup role. Add in the fact that he’s caught Darvish before and you’ve got the recipe for a non-roster invitee to watch.

Taylor Davis – C

I’ll be honest. I really just included him so I could post this:

Davis loves him some camera.
