Buddy’s Best – Let It Snow

Written by , Posted in General

As the snow falls in Buddyland, I’m putting off shoveling snow and instead sifting through the many comments on our beloved Cubs website from the last week. As always, it was entertaining! Here’s a quick snapshot…

  1. Archer for Schwarber, straight up.
  2. Mullets for Russell, Baez, Happ, and Zorb.
  3. Why do you think the Cubs picked up so many pitchers? Because now Maddon can go to the bullpen 17 times a game instead of 15.
  4. Just what Maddon needs. More toys.
  5. Bunt for a hit Meat when the opposition shifts you.
  6. Another World Series Championship would be a nice present.
  7. Of course you know more about Seymour’s finances than he does.
  8. I liked it better when you were regaling us with insurance stories.
  9. You once had an editor who never would’ve let you get away with such obvious and shameless clickbait.
  10. We are anxiously awaiting 2018 and are pretty much desperate for anything to talk about as you can probably tell just from this very thread!

Question of the week..Who is your all time favorite baseball player? On the flipside, who is your most-despised ball player of all time? For me, Billy Buck is my favorite, and Steve Garvey is my mortal enemy (because of 1984). What say you?

  • JTBarrett16

Favorite all-time: Kerry Wood. I’ve established why before
    Most hated: Edmonds

  • Doc Raker

Ryne Sandberg. Milton Bradley. Guess which one is which.

    • JTBarrett16

      How can anyone hate Sandberg?

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

Only Doc can tell you that.

      • Buddy

Dave Martinez probably didn’t like Ryno very much, and vice versa.

      • To this day I’m guessing!

  • cap’n realist

Mark Grace. Michael Barrett. Should be obvious who is who

    • JTBarrett16

      You hate Grace?

  • Eddie Von White

    Andre Dawson, Josh Beckett.

    • Doc Raker

      The bemulleted Theriot and Fontenot

  • Great question! My all time favorite player is Ron Guidry from back when I was a wee young lass. Currently I don’t have a favorite, I just go with the flow. (Kris Bryant is dreamy tho!) My least favorite is Ryan Braun.

  • Seymour Butts

    Billy Williams, Pete Rose.

    • Doc Raker

      4256

      • Buddy

        867-5309

      • Doc Raker

Jenny the ball girl, Harry loved her but I think Marla was his favorite.

  • Jerry in Wisconsin

Ryne Sandberg. Anyone in a Cardinal’s uniform.

  • Buddy

Darwin Barney would be near the top of my least favorite Cub list. Other contenders include Mitch Webster, Mel Rojas, Steve Trachsel, Rick Wrona, Neifi Perez, and Scott Servais.

    • You forgot Gregg and the entire bullpen from that era.

My favorites are Hawk, Ryno, Maddux, Dunston, D-Lee, Aramis, anyone named Wood or Johnson, Big Z, and the entire 2016 roster.

      • Buddy

Yep, Kevin Gregg outings were indeed painful to watch. So were all the rotten Koyie Hill and Tyler Colvin at bats I sat through during those years.

      • Doc Raker

Remember that poster of Dunston turning the double play and he just threw the ball and he is horizontal in the air. Does anyone have that poster?

      • Buddy

I wish. I also wish I had a poster of Dunston whiffing as he tried to punch Andy McGaffigan. Flew right over him if memory serves.

      • Doc Raker

        The “Shawn-0-Meter”, remember that?

      • Buddy

Absolutely! Back then I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. Unfortunately, the Shawon-O-Meter always seemed to hover around .265.

      • Doc Raker

He started the season so poorly that the Shawn-O-Meter kept rising for the second half of the season and it was a lot of fun. Every time he got a big hit they show the Shawn-O-Meter in the bleachers surrounded by the cheering bleacher fans. It was fun. I wonder if it helped Dunston focus game after game. “Can’t have the Shawn-O-Meter going down today”

That was the Cubs, they might of been in last place but the fans would find something to cheer about.

      • Buddy

Luckily there wasn’t an Out-O-Meter for Dunston. That number would have been very high every year

      • That was part of it.. Shawawwn had a funny name, cannon for an arm, hit spottily, and was fun to watch in general.

      • Doc Raker

Grace always complained about his hand hurting after catching Shawon’s throws

    • Jerry in Wisconsin

My least favorite Cub was Larry Himes, he was the only person who almost had me giving up on being a Cubs fan. CAPS, Mr. Himes was truly the worst GM the Cubs ever had.

      • JTBarrett16

I’m aware of the crimes he committed. He let Maddux walk over half a million, and then gave MORE money to his craptacular replacements.

  • Monty

    My favorite – Boots Day

  • JTBarrett16

Todd Hundley is a Cub on my poop (family blog) list

  • Well let’s see now from a Cubs perspective my least favorite ever is Jason Marquis, and apparently the Cubs themselves didn’t think much more of him than I did based on his exclusion from playoff rosters.

My favorite, as most of you remember, was Geovany Soto though his stock went in steep decline with me once the marijuana use became known. I don’t care if someone uses drugs but I can’t be in a relationship with a drug user. And you know we were on the brink of something special after he smiled at me at the game that one time so sadly I had to put the breaks on any further involvement.

    • JTBarrett16

I don’t recall Marquis being left off the Cubs playoff roster. I remember St. Louis left him off their roster in 2006 though

      • I think you’re right. I think he was just bitching about not being a playoff starter after having started all year.

      • JTBarrett16

I think that’s what it was. I do remember Piniella was enraged about it at one point

      • threw his hat.. threw first base.. threw his cubbie dog at Marquis..

      • JTBarrett16

You forgot he kicked some dirt on him too

    • Liz Soto has a nice ring to it.. for shame.

    • Doc Raker

      Heartbreaking

  • Kyle

    I actually despised Sammy Sosa.

  • Ben

    Kerry Wood Carlos Marmol
