Buddy’s Best – If It Ain’t Broke

Written by , Posted in General

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Basically, that’s a nice way of saying it is OK to steal somebody else’s great idea, which is essentially what I’m doing. At least I’m honest about it.

The Lizzies are the gold standard—the rest of us are just fighting for second place. So with that in mind, here are a few recent comments (in no particular order) that got my attention, hurt my brain, made me chuckle, and more. Enjoy this week’s list, and keep the comments coming!

  1. If St. Louis gets both Stanton and Arrieta, I think they can only afford to put 5 other players on the field.
  2. A good edger is hard to find.
  3. Pretty sure Ray Walston is still dead.
  4. I think it is obvious Arrieta is a quality 5 inning starter that will be over paid for a period of time that is way too long.
  5. In 3,800 at bats against major league pitching, how many home runs do you think you could hit?
  6. Pandering is not attractive.
  7. Dying is actually on my bucket list, but I’m saving it for last.
  8. Pickins are slim in the off-season.
  9. If Rondon is not going to be the 8th inning guy, he does not deserve $6 million.
  10. Giving Brad Hand a job doesn’t seem very appealing to me.

Lizzie used to close her Girlie View column with a question, so I’ll steal that idea, too. If you were starting a major league team from scratch, and every single current player was available for you to draft, who would you take #1 overall, and why?

  • Doc Raker

    1) Carlos Correa 2) Schwarbs

  • Consider me flattered. Especially that you used the image too! ☺️ Great list! And thanks for doing this. It makes me happy.

  • 1) Ryan Theriot
    2) Mike Fontenotgoingtogooglethisagain

  • JTBarrett16

    1. Stanton
    2. Judge

    • Buddy

Speaking of Stanton, sounds like he will not accept a trade to either SF or St. Louis. According to the magic Google machine, he will only accept a trade to the Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, and………….the Cubs.

      • JTBarrett16

I wouldn’t want to play in St. Louis either, and SF isn’t conducive to his power

      • Doc Raker

Schwarbs for Stanton? No, I think we need pitching for Schwarbs.

      • Buddy

Sounds like Stanton may be a Yankee very soon.

      • Doc Raker

Who would they trade for him? Stanton and Judge in the same line up, scary.

      • Buddy

Marlins got Starlin Castro, pitching prospect Jorge Guzman and infield prospect Jose Devers for Stanton and about $30 million toward the mega contract.

      • JTBarrett16

After unloading Dee Gordon, Jeter will probably try to unload Castro as well. This is no different from the fire sale the Marlins held after the 1997 World Series, or their fire sale in 2005-06. And also in 2012-13 when they unloaded all the mega contracts they signed the year prior.

  • cap’n realist

    1. Baez-offensive prowess combined with spectacular with Defense up the middle
    2. Andrew McCutchen-same reasons.

I’m assuming i can draft and sign pitching.

Bloggers are super cheap. I can probably get 11 Yellon’s, 13 Desipio’s’ and 4 Aiello’s for 2 Sherm’s. Except, who the hell outside of Cartagena wants 2 Sherm’s?

    • Sherm’s Mom

      Who the hell wanted one?

    • JTBarrett16

Are you safe from the wildfires? My friends in Murrieta are on standby to evacuate.

      • cap’n realist

The beach cities have a very low fire probability. The fires breed fuel, which in this case is trees and uncleared brush. Just not enough brush here to make it a concern. It’s hillsides that really get burning.

      • JTBarrett16

That explains why my uncle doesn’t have to worry then. He lives at the Torrey Pines/Del Marr border and is 2 miles from the ocean

  • Buddy

I think I’d still take Trout #1 overall, but other players in the running would be Harper, Correa, Scherzer, Lindor, and of course the Judge.

    • JTBarrett16

I considered Trout and Harper as well for my #1 pick

      • Doc Raker

After watching Harper strike out against the Cubs in clutch situations in October I decided against Harper. Plus he is a corner outfielder. I think for over all first pick I want up the middle defense with elite hitting. Trout is a good pick for sure.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

I agree never waste your first round pick on any of the following: DH, 1B or corner outfield, as any good hitter can take those postions, and there are many great hitters who do not field well.

      • JTBarrett16

I don’t get it. What if you’ve got an absolute masher who plays one of those positions?

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

An absolute masher at any of the “up the middle” positions will offer you a greater marginal value than an absolute masher at the positions I listed above. The reason is that there are many absolute mashers in those positions, so taking the 2nd best in those positions does not have you giving up as much as taking the second best in the “up the middle” positions.

  • Bartz
    • Doc Raker

      Altuve is a good pick.

      • At this point I’d take any lead off hitter who actually has some lead off hitter credentials.

      • Doc Raker

Rumor has it that Rizzo will be the Cubs lead off hitter in 2018.
        1)Rizzo,
        2)Bryant,
        3)Schwarbs,
        4)Contreras,
        5)Almora,
        6) Russell,
        7)Javy,
        8)pitcher,
        9)Heyward

      • JTBarrett16

We both know Zobrist will be in the lineup too much.

      • Doc Raker

I blocked Zo from my memory other than the Nov 2 2017 10th inning hit

      • JTBarrett16

Your lineup would be ideal, but much like Niefi was a toy for Dusty, Zobrist is a toy for Maddon.

      • Doc Raker

        Sadly, you are correct.

      • JTBarrett16

Heyward shouldn’t be in the lineup either, but he’s another toy.

  • Buddy

Now that Ohtani has signed, maybe the offseason action will heat up.

  • Brad Lyerla

Thinking about the coming season, then folks might want to check out Jared Wyllys’ piece on Cubs Den this morning. Realistic. Sobering.

As for who I would draft first, I believe in Kris Bryant. I expect his next five years will be elite. And despite all of the drama surrounding him, I would consider Kyle Schwarber too. If I was an NL team, I would make him my first baseman.

We got a new puppy and Donna named him ‘Walter’. Been trying to think of Walters in Cubs history. Any ideas would be welcomed.

    • Doc Raker

Walter Mathau was the great manager for the North Valley Bears sponsored by Chico’s Bail Bonds. Walter Payton was a favorite Walter of mine. The puppy is a male?

This Jared person you speak of, we know him right?

      • Brad Lyerla

First, as I understand it, Doc, Jared got his start from Joe as a writer on VFTB. He qualifies as an old friend around here, I would say.
Second, Walter is a male. A great addition to our home.

Finally, I was a Matthau fan. But Walter Mitty might be a better fit. Until ‘16, the Cubs were the Walter Mitty of MLB.

      • cap’n realist

Matthau was great in Bad News Bears. Even better in the Grumpy Old Men/Out To Sea/Odd Couple films with Jack Lemmon. Some of the best Americana one can see on film.

      • Doc Raker

        Don’t forget the Odd Couple.

      • Doc Raker

I know Jared wrote here at the view, it was tongue and cheek. Jared was always very like able, he seemed to be a Cubs deep thinker and didn’t have much interest in Condiment Fingers or National Anthem protests. A sensible fellow with a good baseball brain Jared struck me as.

    • JTBarrett16

Do you have a link to the article? I agree with you on Schwarber. And the Cubs probably would but he’s blocked by Rizzo

      • Brad Lyerla

Just navigate to cubsden.com. A great companion to View From the Bleachers.

      • JTBarrett16

The site doesn’t exist. I tried that. Then I looked at Jared’s facebook since I’m friends with him for the link and it’s not there

      • JTBarrett16

        I found it. It’s through chicagonow.com

      • cap’n realist

        Please focus your comments there…
