Cubs Fall To Brewers Friday Night…Remain 1/2 Game Ahead In Division

Written by , Posted in General

With the chance to increase their lead in the Central division standings, the Cubs lost against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night 2-1.  This was a series heading into Friday in which the Cub fans wanted to take the opportunity to step on the Brewers throat and tighten the grip on the division.  Solid pitching by Jose Quintana (6 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 6 K’s) was not enough to keep the Brewers down.  Crafty Harvard grad Brent Suter was a bit better holding the Cubs bats quiet, who have been hot going into the game, by going 7 IP giving up 4 hits and no runs.  The Cubs never challenged the Brewer starter and found themselves victim to the double play ball once again.  The lone Cubs run came off a monstrous home run by Javier Baez.  That came in the 8th innings off of newly acquired reliever Anthony Swarzak.  The Cubs came close to pushing the tying run across the plate in the top of the 9th but Kyle Schwarber struck out, off closer Corey Knebel, with Anthony Rizzo at 3rd base.  With the loss the Cubs lead in the division shrunk to 1/2 game.  *Staying Positive*

Shady Defense

Outside of Jason Heyward’s great play to rob Ryan Braun of a home run in the bottom of the 3rd, the Cubs defense seemed a bit off on Friday night.  After Addison Russell’s play in the hole during the 7th inning, our stellar broadcast team (Len and JD) made the point that their was great work, great defense around all game long.  They must have been still glamouring over the sausage race as they forgot about Albert Almora Jr looking like a pig on skates trying to catch a line drive, or Kris Bryant failing to throw to home plate on a force out (which would have easily beaten the runner), or Baez not being able to catch a ball thrown at him during the game.  Bryant’s decision to not throw home ultimately lead to the winning run.  We are still 1/2 game ahead of the Brewers for first place in the division. *Staying Positive*

Trade Deadline

With the trade deadline fast approaching it will be interesting to see what moves Theo Epstein makes as additions to this team.  Talk over the past couple of weeks has the Cubs zeroed in on adding another reliever and a backup catcher.  The Dodgers and Yankees seem to be the teams most aggressive in acquiring starters like Sonny Gray and Yu Darvish.  Theo is not a GM that likes to sit around and watch everyone else get in all the action.  Will it be a reliever and/or backup catcher?  Or will they make the splash for another starter (maybe bring up Jen-Ho Tseng??)?  With the Cubs having a 1/2 game lead over the Brewers in the division, it will be interesting to see what he does to help this team win the division title. *Staying Positive*

Hey Sherm, in case you are interested:

Pitcher to watch: Adbert Alzolay (Cubs’ No. 4), Tennessee vs. Montgomery (7 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)

Alzolay, 22, has been lights-out in his first three Double-A starts,
posting a 1.69 ERA while striking out 17 and walking four in 16 innings.
The right-hander was promoted to Tennessee after he earning All-Star
honors in the Class A Advanced Carolina League, where he went 7-1 in 15
    starts with a 2.98 ERA and a .217 opponents’ average in 81 2/3 innings.

I think something is wrong with Bryant. He has made so many bad plays lately(running etc.) and his hitting is really off. Hope he is not having clubhouse or personal problems. We need him and Rizzo to step up.

    • Doc Raker

That finger injury might be hurting him more than we know.

      • Karen Hirsh

He got 3 for 4 tonite so I don’t think it’s his little pinky.

  • Doc Raker

Why doesn’t anyone have faith in Caratini, give the guy a chance. A switch hitting catcher, let’s give him a chance.

    • Bryzzo1744

It’s not that they don’t have faith in him, it’s that at this point in his development, it’s better for him to play everyday. If he can rake at the MLB level, we can leverage him for assets.

      • cap’n realist

If he can ‘rake’ at the MLB level, I’d think they’d leverage Contreras. A couple commenters around here seem to use the term rake inappropriately.

      • Bryzzo1744

Why would you leverage Contreras and not Caratini?

      • cap’n realist

        If Caratini could rake….never mind.

    • Doug S.

I think we should play him. Been thinking abut Contreras burnout. Sure he’s young, presumably durable and old school folks can quote catcher iron man records, but shit’s changed.

      • Eddie Von White

        You’re right.

      • Bryzzo1744

He’s in today at 1B. We just need Schwarber in as well.

      • Bryzzo1744

        First career MLB HR today!

  • Doc Raker

    F YA JHEY

  • Kyle

Did anyone have any doubt Lackey would give that 2 run lead right back with a home run?

    • Bryzzo1744

I thought he would give them the lead

  • Ben

1st place bby oh yeah 🙂

Caratini hit the game winning home run. My genius was correct, give the Tini a chance.
