What’s new in Cubs’ news?

Written by , Posted in General

Obviously there was no game Tuesday night, but that is ok because I think the city of Chicago needed a small break after all the emotions of Monday night. The banner raising, trophy showing and walk-off winning is more than enough for a couple nights. So what else were the Cubs up to on their “off” day?

  • Javier Baez got his own street sign in Humboldt Park; close to Little Cubs Field. It reads Javier ‘Javy’ Baez Way; see the tweet from the Cubs.
  • Kris Bryant took BP in downtown Chicago the video shows him taking his cuts and hitting some into the river where a fan was in a kayak.
  • Kyle Schwarber signed autographs at Macy’s on State St. in Chicago.
  • Jon Lester tweeted out a thank you to the fans for braving the almost 2 hour delay and elements for the home opener.

I think it is really cool how endearing this team has become to the fan base and I love that they spend their off days (which they don’t have much of) interacting and doing things for the fans. There isn’t a single guy on the team that I have any problem rooting for (even John Lackey).

A quick look at the (way to early to really matter) Fangraphs’ Cool Standings Page:

  • Cubs are on pace for 97 wins
  • 91.1% chance to win the division with a 6.3% chance of winning the Wild Card
    • Total of 97.4% of making the playoffs
  • 29% chance to win the NLCS
  • 15.5% chance to win the World Series again (tied with the Dodgers for highest)

This team is good and has the depth to weather a few injuries and still be good, it is such a weird feeling as a fan to first of all have the Cubs be the reigning World Series Champions and on top of that to still have sky-high expectations for this season. They could win it all again and it really would not shock the baseball world. Buckle up for what is going to be another fun season at Wrigley.

  • Sherm

A wise man once said “off days suck.” Might have been Pericles. Not sure.

    • Bryzzo1744

I think it was General Sherman’s great-great grandson.

  • Bryzzo1744

Side note, is it possible that the hyperlinks can be in a different color or underlined so we know where they are?

    • Doug S.

CAPS – why is the Rays-Red Sox game Monday at 8:00 AM Pacific?

      • Bryzzo1744

Monday is Patriot’s Day in MA, and the Red Sox always play at 11AM that day because the Boston Marathon is run that day as well.

    • Joe Aiello

I actually designed it that way with the specific purpose of driving you insane.

      • Sherm

You were incredibly late to THAT party…

  • Bryzzo1744

Forbes released franchise values yesterday. Cubs are the 4th most valuable:
    http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/19133813/new-york-yankees-top-forbes-worth-rankings-37-billion
Once the renovations are complete and the TV deal in place, combine that double barrel revenue stream increase with a couple more World Series championships, and our value will be a lot more when they do this 3 years from now.

    • Sherm

“Our” value? Are you really a Ricketts?

      • Bryzzo1744

        Sucks to grammar

      • Sherm

        Sucks to literate?

      • Ben

        Sucks to Suck??????

      • Sherm

Said every Cardinal fan in unison…

      • Bryzzo1744

        whiney sux fans too

      • Ben

Wish there were more teams that we could incorporate the word sucks into :/

      • Bryzzo1744

Just add sucks to it. Like Samardzidja. I refer to him as Sasuckzidja.

      • Ben

Not all teams it makes sense too though. Yours does. I mean take the marlins for example suxmarlins that just doesnt make sense lol

      • Bryzzo1744

        The Marsucks

      • Get a room, you two.

      • Ben

Back to baseball it is lol

  • Doc Raker

Javy Baez Way- all the kids at Little Cubs Field in Humboldt Park must swing wildly at any pitch that is 3 feet outside. That is the Javy Baez Way kids

  • Brad Lyerla

I met Tom and Cecie Ricketts once at a party. My wife and I talked to them for a half hour or longer. (My wife is very good in social situations. I try to say as little as possible.) I can tell you that they were as comfortable and genuine as your next door neighbor. Truly nice people. I am happy for them and glad that they own the Cubs.

They are doing good things for Chicago. But I am uncomfortable with the new aristocracy in America that they represent. Just thinking over my coffee this morning (and nothing good can come from that).

    • Adam Peters

Throughout human history the rich and powerful have always sought to increase their wealth and power. The American experiment was set up with many safeguards specifically designed to protect against that, but our current leadership is working hard to dismantle those safeguards and move things here in that direction. To be fair, this has been going on for a couple decades, but now it’s just so in our face it’s impossible to ignore–or at least to not be aware.

Unfortunately, most Americans are fat and happy enough (though we’re increasingly too fat and less happy) that I don’t see the People rising up to get in the way of this until very much damage has been done, if then.

      • Sherm

Those last two posts seemed highly political and un-baseball related. Just saying. So we don’t like socialism and we don’t enjoy aristocracy. Next. Now back to our regularly scheduled BASEBALL BLOG.

      • Brad Lyerla

        Sorry I brought it up.

      • Bryzzo1744

The problem is everyone votes for the establishment candidates. The democrats and the GOP both suck. I voted for Mickey Mouse as a protest vote.

      • Sherm

So, what if no one else in the country voted as their own protest? And yours was the only vote? Mickey Mouse would be our president. Minnie Mouse would be the first lady. The White House would move to Orlando or Anaheim. Donald Duck would be vice-president. And it would be your fault.

And then in the next election, Warner Brothers would surely oppose them. Elmer Fudd might run. Or Bugs Bunny. It would be a mess. You got lucky. This time.

      • Bryzzo1744

I’d vote for Homer Jay Simpson in that case. We have an oaf in the White House as it is and the man eats like Homer Simpson. I made a bet with my landlord that if Trump doesn’t make it to 2020 what will be the cause. The democrats getting control of Congress in 2018 and giving him the boot, or Trump dying from eating like HJS.

      • Sherm

I am probably nit-picking, but your opinion of the president isn’t necessary here. This is not a political blog. I want MSNBC, I know where to go. Whether he’s a genius or an oaf, or somewhere in between…that’s your personal opinion and this is not the forum for it, in my opinion.

      • Bryzzo1744

My dog is smarter than the president. I have that bumper sticker on my car. Works no matter who the president is

      • Doc Raker

I just sold your San Diego ticket

      • Bryzzo1744

I got it when Barry was president.

      • Bryzzo1744

Why would it have to be Orlando or Anahiem. It could be Bristol, home of ESPN. That’s where Disney makes their money. ESPN basically subsidizes the rest of the corporation.

      • cap’n realist

I wish they kept you busier at work, CAPS….

      • Doc Raker

Vote for Foghorn Leghorn- “Son , I say Son, Vote for the horn Son!”

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

If any of them get elected maybe we can then find out who framed roger rabbit.

      • You sniff cash register ink too?

      • Bryzzo1744

        No, but Ned Flanders does

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

Next he will say he like sniffing the paper after is comes off of the mimeo copier.

      • Doc Raker

Don’t get me started. It is only in your face now because you weren’t paying attention previously. Whether you like Trump or not he isn’t a shill for special interests like all of our other leaders from both parties. If either party made policy for the people and not their special interests Trump would of never happened, he wouldn’t of even ran for office.

      • Adam Peters

He’s a shill for his own interests, which he clearly thinks are very special. Only a little better in that he gets in the way of the other special interest shilling unless it benefits him directly.

In honor of Sherm’s request I’m going to drop the subject now.

      • Doc Raker

Good thing the former Sec of State who collected 10’s of millions of dollars as Sec of State from foreign entities for her family foundation in return for favorable policy decisions didn’t win. I would suspect you would be really upset about that candidate selling us out as President like she did when she was Sec of State, or maybe that special interest shill didn’t bother you so much.

Bad Raker, Bad Raker. Stop it now. I am sorry Sherm. I owe Seymour a virgin Pina Colada and everyone else a Redbreast.

      • Adam Peters

        I voted for Bernie.

OK, I’m really done now. Oh hey, did y’all hear that Heyward sucks?

    • Dork

It truly was a great day in cubs history when the ricketts bought the team I think that gets overlooked sometimes with the theo stuff

      • Brad Lyerla

I agree with this enthusiastically. It was a great day. I finished Tom Verducci’s THE CUBS WAY last week. It includes a profile of the Ricketts, Theo and his team and Maddon, interleaved with a description of the seven games of the ’16 World Series. It is very well written.
The description of the Rickett’s is flattering and fair. But the very best thing about the Rickett’s is Tom acknowledging that he does not know enough about baseball to contribute much to the baseball operations. And then having the self discipline to give the power to Theo and then let Theo do his thing with no interference and full support, financial and otherwise.

      • Bryzzo1744

I’ve met Tom Ricketts twice. First as an election judge in 2010 right after he bought them. I was like you’re the new Cubs owner. He was like yup that’s me. I asked for a photo with him he goes sure, and he gets ready to do it. I said to him vote first and then we can take the photo. A year later, I made a delivery to his house. As a joke I said you’re not getting this until you fire Jim Hendry. He’s a very nice down to earth person. Him and his family don’t have big heads by any means. My landlord was watching the ceremonies with me on Monday and he was like you wouldn’t know they were on the Forbes 400 by the way they dress.

      • Buddy

I have never met Tom Ricketts, but I did meet Wilson Pickett. I was buying beer, he was buying a magazine. I said, “How’s it going?” He said, “Any better and there would have to be an investigation.”

      • Sherm

I met Don Winslow once, and Winslow looks a lot like Wilson at a quick glance. He’s a terrific author who lives in Julian, CA – home of Mom’s Famous Apple Pie.

        Off afternoons suck.

      • Buddy

I met Kellen Winslow once. I was again buying beer. He was getting directions from the clerk. I said, “How’s it going?” He said, “What are you, a cop?”

      • Eddie Von White

I was in Winslow, Arizona once. I was getting gas and I said to the guy at the next pump: “Sure is windy.” He said, “Yup.” He was a real nice guy I think. Had a big dog with long ears in the truck with him. I think he said his name was Rabbit. Eddie Rabbit.

      • Eddie Von Rabbit. Sure didn’t take you long to embrace this inane thread.

      • Eddie Von White

Can only hold out so long. I’m a sucker for inane conversation.

      • Running out to grab Gorilla Glue, watching baseball together, political/Simposon’s banter.. that sounds more like a spouse than a landlord.

      • Bryzzo1744

He’s like a dad to me. The house I rent the people there are like family to me.

      • Eddie Von White

Do you yell at them all the time?

  • cap’n realist

I keep thinking about the last time a can’t miss Chicago sports franchise became larger than life and spent off days and every other waking moment immersed in self congratulatory civic events and hawking toys at Dispensas Castle and hustling Chevys for Fencl Tufo. You know a Cub version of Super Bowl Shuffle is coming soon. A lot of eyes are off the ball right now. As long as they’re winning it will be OK. For the record, I’m questioning the public appearances now…before things go bad.

    • Bryzzo1744

The Jordan Bulls. I don’t think they did all this stuff the Cubs are doing though. I’m more concerned with what happens once the players get their contracts.

      • Adam Peters

I don’t remember the Bulls doing any Super Bowl Shuffle like stuff, but my memory could be failing me.

I agree this stuff is worrisome. Visiting cancer stricken kids in the hospital is a great thing. Hitting balls into the Chicago river, not so much.

      • Bryzzo1744

No I meant the Bulls were rock stars in Chicago (and all across the world, the Bulls have so many fans from across the world because of MJ)

      • Brad Lyerla

Some blamed the Bears fall from grace on the extra-curricular stuff. But it was really about their chronically injured QB. They were 14-2 after being 15-1 in ’85. But they went into the playoffs with McMahon out, Fuller gone, Tomczak green and Flutie brand new and resented.
Washington knocked ’em out in the first round, when there really was no question that the Bears were the better team.

      • Bryzzo1744

Ditka running out Buddy Ryan also hurt too. He was the architect of the defense, not Ditka.

    • Doc Raker

My Uncle Joe worked at Fencl Tufo, we had many cars from Fencl Tufo.

      • Sherm

I don’t have an Uncle Joe, but I remember Uncle Joe Benson from KLOS. He seemed nice.

    • Buddy

I don’t mind the public appearances and promotional stuff as long as they don’t take forever like the event the other night. That was like watching an animal get tortured…very slowly. Hoping the ring ceremony moves a little faster.

      • Bryzzo1744

To be fair it was opening day so you have all the pomp and circumstance that comes with that regardless of whether you’re World Series champions or not. And a 2 hour rain delay. The only extra part of the pregame ceremony was the banner raising.

      • Eddie Von White

Still torturous. Being fair is not part of it.

      • Bryzzo1744

Your anger is misguided. Yell at the weather gods.

      • Eddie Von White

Your assumption is misguided. I’M NOT ANGRY!!

      • Bryzzo1744

        Eddie Von Calm

      • Sherm

        Is it 8:05 EDT yet?

      • Eddie Von White

        We can hope.

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

STOP YELLING IT IS HURTING MY EARS!

  • Bryzzo1744

Doc rejoice. You will not get the MLB Network feed tonight. So if it’s Lame Len on the call, you won’t be subjected to him.

    • Doc Raker

Looks like I get the local Dojer feed. Rejoice.

      • Bryzzo1744

If they use Lame Len, I’ll share whatever stupid things he says. You tell us what the Dodgers broadcasters say

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

        That sounds like a threat.

  • Doug S.

Ring day today and the weather should be good to get the game in on time.

  • Eddie Von White

I determined this morning I was not going to visit VFTB until I had my morning work done. It was an exercise in self-discipline and I accomplished it. I can see I missed nothing. Should have waited longer.

    • cap’n realist

      Eddie Von Diligence

      • Eddie Von Dismissive

      • Jerry in Wisconsin

        Eddie Should Von Waited Longer

      • Sherm

If he’d have played for the Phillies, he could be Eddie Von Hayes

      • Ben

Can we get back to baseball please lol

      • Buddy

Do you remember who the Phillies gave up for Von Hayes? I believe it was five or six players.

      • Bryzzo1744

Was he part of the Larry Bowa/Ryan Sandberg trade?

      • Don Winslow, Kellen Winslow, Michael Winslow from Police Academy, Urkel’s neighbor Carl Winslow, and one or two other guys.

      • Sherm

Carl Winslow was in Die Hard, but he used a different name.

      • Doug S.

Man – I resisted posting something silly earlier. Now it seems sane.

      • Eddie Von White

        Welcome to my world.

      • cap’n realist

        Eddie Von Cordial

      • cap’n realist

Eddie Von Hayes will last longer than Eddie Von Joshua did as Cub hitting coach in ’09….

  • Bartz
    • Sherm

It seems longer since Monday night to now than it did from November 2 to opening day.

I’m watching the Cards – Nats. Yeah. It’s that bad. And thinking that Max Scherzer looks a lot like Dierks Bentley.

      Is it 8:05 EDT YET?

      • Doug S.

Surprised the toothpick has lasted that long in DC

      • Sherm

I can’t say for certain, but I think he changes them every so often.

      • Doug S.

        A somewhat comforting thought.

      • Bryzzo1744

Scherzer must be thinking about a little white tank top sitting right there in the middle by him

  • Ben

Take a moment this will be the only time that len does not talk about music when he is near a microphone lol
