Talking Cubs Baseball Since 2003

December 2011

Happy Sunday! I must begin by giving a shoutout to Hoosier Nation and the IU men’s basketball team who defeated Kentucky in an uproar yesterday, the final basket even earning top play on SportsCenter. The timing couldn’t be less impeccable as finals creep around the corner this week…

My life has become a wonderful oxymoron. As the semester concludes, I can’t help but think about, and actually look forward to, the start of the baseball season. Sure, sure that may be obvious, but lately my life has taken a turn where baseball is the last thing on my mind. *Gasp* I know. I can’t believe it either. It’s funny how within a few short months your life can become something you had never seen coming.

Enjoy the little things while they’re still around. You just never know.

However, one thing we can all be certain about today is the continuation of Wizzie awards. Have at it.

The Wizzies

  • Mark Riggins’ mustache was the finest display of facial hair we’ve had on the team since Matt Clement’s goatee. We should probably start looking for someone to fill the fumanchu sized hole on the team…
  • Pitching coach…yawn. Soriano…yawn. Jap Pitcher…as long as he has good taste in sushi and can pitch to his contract, who cares.
  • First of all – hideous logo. Who designed that, the owner’s 12 year old daughter? Secondly – How long have they been keeping Rich Uncle Pennybags locked up? They spend $100 million on Reyes and now $27 million on Heath Bell, plus they are rumored to be flirting with King Albert. Goodness gracious. Looks like they can pay people to wear those awful uniforms…
  • I like Doc’s idea a lot. They should also take Bozo the Clown
  • Why stop there? The Marlins should also pay the Cubs utility bills, pick up their mail, mow the field, and clean the bathrooms.
  • Logic puzzles are a math major’s wet dream.
  • Darwin Barney mans all the positions because he is a gamer-grinder who hustles and plays the game “the right way.”
  • Joe: Are you angling for a lump of coal for Christmas? Maybe reindeer poop?
  •  I’m holding my breath for a move than cleans out our stock of mediocre infielders… we still have our ace in the hole: Jeff “Untouchable” Baker.
  • I had to moderate my own comment. I wonder what word it didn’t like. Probably “healthy”.
  • Bacon is meat candy.
  • Looks like Santa will be skipping Ryan Braun’s house, he’s been a very, very bad boy.

Question of the Week

Some of these moments may have previously been shared, but following Indiana’s win today, I must ask. What are the top three moments in sports you will always remember?

  • Buddy

Great win for the Hoosiers yesterday. Fantastic finish!

  • The Packers are 12-0 (I’m a life long fan)

IU basketball is 9-0 (and just beat Kentucky!) (I’m an IU alum)

Even my high school is 4-0 (lost the state champ game by one point last year). (Ok, I have paid little attention to them over the years)

Geez, if the Cubs could just get on board….

That’s a tough one, the moments I will always remember
    1. The 2nd Bulls 3-peat (Jordan clutching the ball and crying after they won on Father’s Day in 1996, The Flu Game and Steve Kerr hitting the winner in 1997, Jordan’s last shot in 1998). I was too young to remember the first
    2. Switching over from the Bears to the Packers
    3. The 3 stooges formation. I was life-guarding, I had a break around 8PM, some people came by the pool office and asked if the Queen had announced his signing, and then half an hour later, the head guard came on the PA and announced he had signed with Miami. I told the boss if he signs with the Knicks I am going to throw my fanny pack at the TV bc I will have lost 200 bucks.

  • Buddy

I’m not sure where this ranks on my all-time list, but I will always remember watching Buster Douglas knock out Mike Tyson. It was obvious right then that we just saw something historic.

Growing up in northern Indiana and rooting for IU (Bobby Knights era) and going to almost every Friday night basketball game of the local high school pretty much meant I was a basketball junky. It’s nice to see that they are having a good season again. Been a long time.

  • Seymour Butts

It gets hard to remember what I’ll never forget.

    1. Listening to Superbowl I on an AM radio in an IMAX precursor type theater in Chicago, watching Dr Doolittle. I was 8 and numerous fathers around me were in constant contact as they too were being forced to miss the game.
    2. Joe Carters HR off of the wild thing to win the WS (approx ’82).
    3. IU winning everything in 76, the year I graduated HS. I also grew up in northern Indiana.

  • 1) Hawk’s bat incident in 91… night game on WGN… even my mom knew that was atypical
    2) Bartman
    3) E6 Alex Gonzales

  • Eddie Von White

    1. Scott May, Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner and Bobby Knight winning it all. I also grew up in Northern Indiana.
    2. Packers at 13-0. I told my kids this is probably a once in a lifetime experience.
    3. ’84 Cubs – living through the 1969 season made 1984 sweet except for Steve Garvey. The excitement and anticipation all summer long was all-inclusive one of the best summers of my life and to top it off Ronald Reagan was President!
