Talking Cubs Baseball Since 2003

October 2011

Hope the weekend has been going well for everyone!

Over the last few months I have grown to use this blog as a safe haven. I certainly don’t have time to read or comment every day, but when I do need a break from all the craziness in my life, I find it comforting to read and contribute here. Even all of you with your families, friends, and full-time jobs fit this new family into your busy schedules. And when the Cardinals won the Series this week, I didn’t have to worry about having the news crammed down my throat from my fellow Cubs fans; in fact, it wasn’t even mentioned. We all approached it with the same demeanor, and that’s what I love. We share a special bond here through our love of the baseball in general.

So I guess I just wanted to use this post as a little thank you to all you for making that possible for me. And on that note, let’s get a glimpse of this week at VFTB.

The Wizzies

  • BLPCB…I just threw up in my mouth a little..can we please not mention Les Walrond, or Jae Kuk Ryu this early in the morning?
  • Cheeseburger and Cheesecake Sabathia is due to break down very soon.
  • Get out the mustard, there will be a lot of innings in 2012 to be eaten I fear…(to be shared by the staff)
  • If we want an innings eater, is Bartolo Colon available? If there is eating to be done, I want him on my side…
  • Also, Sabathia apparently is just an eater, in general…
  • Quade moonlighting in St. Louis now?
  • Good god…..if death is not an option….then Duke, Kazmir, or Willis….oof. Slim pickin’s eh?
  • It is sad to think that Carlos Silva could out-pitch anyone on that list. With no mitt…holding a Hebrew National dog.

Question of the Week

Yes, I know the World Series just ended, but how do you feel about the offseason moves so far and how much more activity do you expect?

I expect that the stove will be sizzling. Of course, Pujols, Fielder, Wilson, and Sabathia are going to be the big names, but I think there will be a good amount of activity. I don’t know what we are going to do, but I expect Theo to start laying the foundation for a culture change that leads us to making the playoffs consistently like Boston does. I think 2012 is going to be a craptastic season with a lot of SUCKAGE, but we won’t be seeing unproductive veterans playing late in the season the way Qaude did. 2012 might suck, but I feel we will be in a good position going forward because the kids will get an extended look, and we will get to see who we have and who can be a good part of the team going forward. There are some of these prospects I feel could be a big part of a World Series run, Cashner and Colvin in particular, if they were given a fair shake.

My predictions on where Pujols, Fielder, Wilson, and CC end up:
Pujols leaves for the Rangers with 10/300
Fielder goes to Boston 8/200. One of my supervisors life-guarding thinks Fielder could go to the Marlins. What does everyone think of that?
Wilson gets 6/90 to join the Angels
Sabathia stays with the Yankees at 6/150
Doc will need to get info on union involvement in Pujols’ deal. I never gave my charity, so this is it:
Harvest Time International in Sanford, FL (outside Orlando). Went there on a service trip in 2010, since I got my internship with Disney, I plan to donate old clothes, books, and toys there. It’s a wonderful place for wonderful causes.

  • Buddy

Should be a great hot stove league this year. Can’t wait to see what Theo and company have up their sleeves.

  • Doc Raker

BLPCB- If Pujols looks to take a ‘home town’ discount I will get the union skinny on it. I will take a look at Harvest Time.

Only if he takes a discount? What if he truly decides he wants to leave for the greener pastures?

  • Chuck

    Don’t call it a comeback
    I’ve been here for years
    I’m rockin my peers
    Put suckas in fear

  • lizzie

Buddy, I agree. I can’t remember being this excited and hopeful during an off season in quite awhile. Not specifically for 2012, but more for the culture change BLPCB mentioned. And @Rachel, really nice sentiments. I couldn’t agree more, and you put it into words perfectly.

  • Memphis via Chicago

I can’t wait to see what direction we go for 2012. I expect some free agents. I expect some players via trade. I don’t expect to win it all in 2012, but it will be really cool to see that “Cubs way” of doing things start to develop.

Is it just me or does having a complete front office just make you feel more comfortable?

  • MJ

I expect little change in personel this year. I think Theo’s going to go to work on building the system up, and generating a new way of how hte orginization is run.

I don’t see him wasting money on Pujols or Fielder when there’s so many holes to fill.

  • Doc Raker

BLPCB- The MLBPA interest lies in Pujols getting the best contract possible. If that happens the union will have no reason to interfere. The union will only interfere if Pujols looks to take a discount. The same goes for all top free agents. The top contracts set the market for all other players and the higher the top contracts are the more everyone else gets so the union has a particular interest in the Pujols, Fielder, Sabathia and Wilson contracts this off season.

    LaRussa is retiring:
Now for Pujols to follow him out of town

  • MJ

^ Makes you wonder if Tony knows something, doesn’t it?

  • ^ How to pull a George Costanza…hit the high note and walk off.

Well Sabathia re-upped for 5/122 with the Yankees, with an option that vests if he doesn’t have shoulder troubles in 2016. Sabathia really needs to get serious about losing some weight. He already cut out the Cap n’Crunch, now he needs to cut out the cheeseburgers and cheesecakes. Lots of corn flakes (no sugar) and chicken (grilled, not fried)
