Game 158 – Welp, So Much for That.

Written by , Posted in General

Cubs 1, Cardinals 2

Box Score / Highlights

What Went Right:

  • The First Three Pitchers: Lopez pitched a stellar 6 innings, giving up zero runs on 4 hits. Cashner threw a scoreless frame, as did Marshall. It’s nice to see our pitching come together like that. I’ve covered Lopez’ last 2 starts, and he’s been pleasantly surprising by keeping his opponents on a short leash. Hopefully Cash will be a solid rotation guy for us next season (and stay un-injured).
  • Defense: There were three plays that stood out from this game – Marlon Byrd’s diving catch to rob Skip Schumaker of a base hit, Pena’s awesome stop at 1st base in the 4th, and Soriano’s rocket throw to third to snag Holiday. Soriano is by no means a great outfielder, but that throw was spectacular.
  • Soriano’s Bat: He had our only RBI today. He was the hero last night. Way to show up 100 games too late.

What Went Wrong:

  • Marmol: Carlos Marmol has never been so infuriating as he was today. HE WAS SO TERRIBLE! If a pitcher gives up a hit and proceeds to walk the next 2 batters, TAKE HIM OUT!! It’s only natural for him to walk in the tying run, then throw a wild pitch to lose the game. Obviously.
  • Quade made some bad decisions today.

  • I’m not going to complain about DeWitt today. He was not productive, and he was not that great at third, but he was not directly detrimental to the team. So for that, I will give him a pass.
  • Castro is everyone’s favorite Cub.
  • Every time Soto was up to bat, I couldn’t help but wonder why Lizzie finds him so attractive. To each her own, Lizzie! 🙂

The Takeaway:

Today’s game was a decent summary of what the season has been for the Cubs. Disappointing. As much as I love the Boys of Summer, summer is over, and today put the nail in the coffin for that realization. The game looked good for the first 8 innings; my hopes were high for a win! But Marmol blew it. It’s time to rebuild. We’re a step in the right direction.

  • Buddy

I’ve never enjoyed watching Marmol pitch, but this year has been beyond painful.

  • Randy

Why would you ever put Marmol in a closer’s role? The guy has lights out stuff, but something in his head doesn’t seem to gel when the game is seriously on the line. I was hoping Quade would put Shark in after the second walk, but nope, gotta let Marmol own it. Grumble…

Idc for Soto, but I want his wife. Wooooooo!! She is REALLY hot.

  • Eddie Von White

Disgusting. I hope this puts the nail in Marmol’s Cub coffin. We don’t need him next year either – let somebody else have a chance to blow the games in the bottom of the 9th.

    Nice recap, Katie.

  • Bruce

Quad should be fired right now, immediately. His lack of action cost the game. I wish Quade was as awake as Dust used to be.

  • lizzie

Katie, it’s a mystery to me (and my better half) too since I usually go in for blonds with blue eyes. But there’s just something about him. (It probably didn’t hurt that my crush began during his rookie year when he brought a bit more to the table than he’s brought since.)

  • Katie

Still… hahaha. But it’s OK, I’ve got a thing for Darwin. Don’t ask me why… but it could be the dimples.

  • Katie

Bruce, I agree. It seems like he gave up a long time ago, but today was just pathetic.

  • Doc Raker

I go more for the Marla the ball girl back in Harry’s day. Soto needs to lay off the chorizo.

  • Buddy

Katie, you have a crush on Danny Darwin? He’s like 60 years old!

  • Larry Sproul

Another Marmol meltdown as Quade watches . After the first walk we expected a change on the mound . It was obvious Marmol was erratic and had no command of this pitches .

You almost had to wonder is Quade on the Redbirds payroll…Another game that should have been a W down the drain . Lets hope the new GM is aware of this mess !!

  • Seymour Butts

I like Darwin as well. His observations on natural selection on the Galapagos Islands are the stuff of legend.
What are the odds that after leading the league in Carlos’s at the beginning of the season, we could start next year Carlos free?

  • Well, we need to do something about Carlos Dempster, Carlos Grabow, Carlos Coleman, and Carlos “CoLo” Lopez.

  • Katie

    Buddy – what can I say? There’s just SOMEthing about a manther…

jswanson – you are so funny! We also need to do something with Carlos Soriano and Carlos Ramirez.

  • Buddy

I think Danny Darwin is married. Probably has grandkids at this point too.
